I think that what he was getting at is this: $1250 per week to fly a Beaver on the coast or the same, or a little more, to fly a -6 in Ontario. What he did forget is the overtime in Ont when fire season does come..... $$$$. It all about the life style and where you want to live. :D

Thank you, Duckie - I think the MNR job has huge potential but I think too that the wages suck. Pretty simple, really, even if you only have a partially-functioning brain. I'd rather be dipped than live in Timmins, having tried it out, although thousands actually live there, I'm told.

The MNR wages are too low considering your position and job description, plus the fact you work year-round as well as dawn to dusk in fire season. You might make in a year what a Conair/Airspray pilot makes in a summer with the winter off.

If this opinion upsets you, then T.S. By the way, the Beaver job is STARTING wage but the MNR job is the best you can get.

Anyone who actually thinks you will only make $1250 per week flying a Twin Otter for the OMNR really hasn't done their home work and probably should stick to the west coast Beaver job. Also anyone who thinks a Twin Otter pilot will work from dawn to dusk also has no idea of what the job really involves.

For sure what you will get is off strip work on tundra tires, fire bombing on floats, a fair bit of travel dropping rabies baits in various parts of the country, training from Flight Safety and lots and lots of time off!! On top of that you will make way more money than what is quoted as that is only base salary, have a great benefit package, pension plan, paid vacation, the ability to bid to other parts of the province and onto different aircraft, a collective agreement and did I mention lots of time off!!

xsbank, once again you are mistaken. OMNR Twin Otter pilots recieve a pay increase every year for five years, at this point you are at the max pay level.

I'm just a sort of normal guy who thinks that MAX means 'all yer gonna get.' ("*Indicates that the salary listed includes the maximum plus merit, in accordance with the OPSEU Collective Agreement.") If that is not true, then WTF does "max plus merit" mean???

I'm always willing to admit if I'm wrong, but I always thought that I understood and had a fairly good grasp of my native tongue, English??

Show me.

"Show me."

Well?

So how much more than a Wet Coast Beaver pilot can you make? Shouldn't you be getting TONS more? Plus having to live in Dryden vs. Saltspring Island?

I've never had a beef about the pay with the MNR. If you enjoy hunting, fishing and the great outdoors, Dryden is the place to be. Our town gets choked with traffic during the summer months because thousands of tourists also like it here.

I'm glad you're happy, Nwont, in fact that's what we all strive for, but it would be big of you to admit that in fact I am not wrong.

Are my EXPECTATIONS too high? Are TO captains really that poorly paid? I always thought that you might be able to make some good dough flying one - maybe its the long days in the summer that make that possible?

Maybe JC could put some perspective on it?

Yeah xsbank, guys in the private sector are getting much more than that. Someone mentioned that's just base salary though. Wonder were the rest comes from? I doubt they do mileage. Hopefully it's not per diems or we'll sick STL on you.

Yes xsbank, you are correct. I humbled myself two posts ahead. Many pilots choose not to apply here because of the pay stated on the job description. I've been here twenty years and still haven't bothered to figure out how that number turns into my paycheck. When you work for the gov its best you don't talk too much about money on public forums but I've never felt underpaid. Pay is very good on a busy fire season. There are ample crews so you always get your days off if you want to turn down the overtime, even when its busy. They will also charter an aircraft to bring you home for time off if necessary. That dosn't happen everywhere.

Rudy, I would like to think we are a little beyond having to lump in per diems to try and make it look like we are paid more. The pay quoted is base salary. You are scheduled an 8 hours day which I believe is 10 am to 6 pm. Anything before and after is overtime at time and one half. Work a day off, time and one half, a stat holiday double time as per the collective agreement.

Believe it or not there are actually pilots paid on a system other than base and mileage which has to be the most archaic system there is.

Ahhh, over time and working on holidays. Didn't think of those. Yes, salary can be quite good most of the time. I'm sure they're glad to have it on a wet year like this one.

Besides all the obvious benefits of working for the MNR, everyone is missing the most important one....not having to be out on the west coast with douchebags who think that it's the be-all and end-all of float flying. :prayer:

I might be a douchebag... but not for the reasons you describe. I've always thought the MNR Turbo Beaver gigs looked pretty appealing. I miss flying the Ontario & Minnesota lakes, and met some great people out there.

Anyone who forms a general opinion of the type of personalities there are in a specific part of this country based on Avcanada posts should think again...

Exactly my point.

Sorry if I offended, wasn't intended to be directed at anyone in particular. Rather the attitude that sometimes seems to surface among certain coast drivers that anyone not flying there is a lesser pilot and as such everyone should aspire to fly the coast.

No, but it's a good, steady job with benefits and a reliable pension - something that is sorely missing in a lot of aviation employment.
