Re: JAR
LOCBC it all depends on hours, if you have alot of multi crew time on aircraft over 33,000KG's then you don't need to complete structured ground school or distance learning just take the 14 ATPL Written Exams.
If you don't have thousands of hours Multi crew hours then you are required to enroll with a Flight School or Ground School unit and study 700+ hours of ground school before applying and taking the 14 exams, expect between 6 and 18 months to complete the ground school alone.
Then you'll need to convert you ATPL thats based on as many hours the school think it'll take you, if someone says 50 hours they are talking BS. The ICAO - JAA IR conversion is required as well, since thats not tested on that CPL flight test, thats a fixed 15 hour course. If you are typed in an aircraft then the skills test can be taken in the aircraft or sim. A type in Europe is very expensive as some of the course has to be completed in the actual aircraft.
If you need any more information consult http://www.jaa.nl
You'll end up spending about 30,000 GBP by the time you've paid for everything including, Landing Fee's. Approach Fee's. ATC Usage Fee's, Medicals, Exams.
Cheers

Re: JAR
I am doing my conversion with NAC and it cost 3000$. Good material (all jeppsen) and good instructors but is a distance learning and most of the job is on your shoulders.
14 exams, 5 hours flight to have the ATPL frozen.
Then 15 hours (10 in the sim and 5 in the air) for the IR conversion that must be done in Europe.
