Help Please! Longstaff Bluff, Nunavut CYUV
Got a charter request to Longstaff Bluff, Nunavut (CYUV). As far as I can tell this airport is no longer in service, it's nowhere to be found in the CFS, except in the list of abandoned aerodromes.
Does anyone have any information on this airport? Has anyone been into this airport lately? Is it even suitable for use anymore? (long way to go just to find out I can't land)
Also wondering if it's even a good idea to be considering going to an airport like this.
Is it a better idea to fly the client into another nearby airport and send him on his way in a chopper?
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me!

Wow, thanks for the quick replies.
Is there anyone taking care of this runway? Anyone we can call for the runway condition?
Are there any other airports in the area?
(Taking a PC-12)

Re: Help Please! Longstaff Bluff, Nunavut CYUV
I was there last year in a Twin Otter. I know that Air Nunavut has been there with their King Air 200 and Air Inuit has been there with a Hawker 748.
It has had very little if any maintenance in the last 20 yrs or so except to have a couple of frost cracks filled a few years ago. Somewhat loose coarse gravel with some grass growing on the strip.
The strip was not in bad shape but can't attest to it this year. I will email someone who has been there this year and get back to you, unless you get more recent info sooner.
Cheers,
ETTW

Re: Help Please! Longstaff Bluff, Nunavut CYUV
I received an email this morning abou the strip.
A month ago it was not bad for a Twin Otter but was soft in the middle third. Might be an issue after rain. Additionally, a King Air 100 was in there recently and apparently it was at the limit for the captain as far as condition of the strip.
There ya go, best info I can get you without pics.

That soft spot will be hard on your prop if you follow my drift. I stopped getting work done in 1992. It's an otter strip now,

Our B-212 went over to Longstaff Bluff today,I asked the pilot to have a close look at the strip and will give you an updated condition report when they get back this evening.

I think asking questions like this is great, but some of these combined with the poster's location of T.O., make me wonder if this is a good idea.Mode C wrote:Does anyone have any information on this airport? The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Well, that is one way to look at it. But considering the questions the person has asked, coupled by his/her statement they are also considering the option of a nearby airport and getting the remainder of the trip done in a helicopter, perhaps it is more likely the person is exercising some degree of caution, good judgement and hence (hopefully) good airmanship.
Would you prefer to withhold intel to prevent the innocent from hurting themselves, or give them the most current and accurate info/cautionary advice possible and leave it to them to decide how they want to conduct the flight. Personally I believe in sharing the information - a person wise enough to ask, is likely wise enough to exercise good judgement.
Mode C - perhaps you might get the best information if you were to share the aircraft type you will be travelling in? As you can see there are people that are well familiar with that airstrip, and some aircraft will be better suited than others (Twin Otter - good, Citation - bad).

Thanks snoopy.
And thanks to all the others who've chipped in some info (especially those of you who have gone way out of your way to help). Given the information we won't be going in with our PC-12 but heading to YFB and sending him the rest of the way with someone else with more appropriate equipment and experience with the airport.
Donald, YES I AM in Toronto. Yes the company is based in Toronto and mostly fly around the southern portions of the continent. But if you're wondering, I spent 2 years flying sched, charter and medevac out of the arctic, but mostly on the west coast of Hudson Bay which is why I am unfamiliar with the Baffin Island area and looking for information regarding whether or not it is a good idea.
Thanks again for all the help guys/gals.

To be honest with you, I don't really know.
Looked it up on Google Earth and saw nothing.

Actually Donald, mu otter is 1260 west of YUV. Closer to YUB. Just hate to see aircraft get bent for nothing."I think asking questions like this is great, but some of these combined with the poster's location of T.O., make me wonder if this is a good idea."

Maybe DEWline cleanup bidding? There is alot of that going on these days up here.canwhitewolf wrote:*********************************************************************canwhitewolf wrote:what ever would anyone want to go to FOX 2 for?
I had asked that question as i had spent a year at hallbeach back in the 70's and was curious what was going on up in that area at present
longstaff or fox2 is probably 140 miles or so away from hallbeach or fox main I think , so i was just curious,
guess it has to do with geology or something
Cheers,

ModeC: No worries. It's just hard to guage someone's experience and knowledge on an anonymous forum. Seeing a question like that, coupled with "T.O", gives me shivers. I have met a few people with "northern" experience, who haven't been past Moosonee.
Your decision can't be faulted, maybe you can hitch a ride in with your customer so you can scout it out personally in case you get a repeat call.
I'd be willing to bet the strip is good for more than just orange and black twin otters, but I haven't been there personally in about 3 years so I could be wrong. LOL.
I'm also guessing remediation or local drilling.

Re: Help Please! Longstaff Bluff, Nunavut CYUV
Was speaking with the 212 pilot this morning, his observation was the strip was solid & it had several tire marks of previous acft landings, there is a narrow, shallow indenture crossing the width of the rwy about 2/3rds down the length from the hanger end.Hall Beach is closer to Longstaff Bluff than Iqaluit but Jet fuel is tougher to get here as restrictions have been placed on it's availability for sched & medevac flts, hope this helps.
