Harper unveils plans to drill in the Arctic?
Just caught a snippet on the news this morning that Canada is going forward with plans to "explore" and drill for oil in the arctic. If so, I'd imagine that all those operators up there are going to get very busy. But at what cost?

Re: Harper unveils plans to drill in the Arctic?
Haven't read any details but on the face of things, I'd say use it or lose it. I have no doubt that if we don't make a real claim on anything in the north, Russia and the US, among others, will start making claims and there won't be anything we can do about it. As for environmental impact/control, same thing applies, I highly doubt the Russian resource industry really cares what Green Peace thinks. Better we stake and make use of our claim, or keep our mouths shut when someone else does, regardless of the consequences.

Don't know how much drilling is required. I thought most of it was explored in the 60s and 70s. Lots of old Herc strips up there.

Harper, or any Canadian government for that matter, has absolutely no say in the control of Canadian hydrocarbons. Canada is the only hydrocarbon exporting country without an energy policy. The Americans allow us to live beside the(ir) oil , as long as we ship it to them.

If you "own " a house-but your neighbor tells you what time to shut the lights off, when to mow the lawn, what time to leave it in the morning-who really owns the house?

But wait... I thought Free Trade was a good thing! "Free" is right in the name... that means it's good, doesn't it?? I'm so confused!BibleMonkey wrote:Harper, or any Canadian government for that matter, has absolutely no say in the control of Canadian hydrocarbons. Are we restricted from trading our oil with other non-NAFTA countries? What would be the costs to Canada to back out of NAFTA? Is there one sector that is benefiting from the trade agreement?
So many questions, so little time.

Are we there yet?
