Oxford Aviation

Post by E-Flyer »

Has anybody gone through this academy ?? did they like it? I know people go through and get on with major airlines like Air Lingus and British Airways so I was wondering what the chances of a Canadian Commercial Pilot with an EU citizenship might be? wondering if anybody just done it b4.

I already contacted them and am waiting for an answer. Would be cool to get feedback from somebody here though.

Cheers

Hey,

I haven't gone through Oxford, but I have a friend who has it's cost him an arm and a leg to get where he is, but it has to be said the links to BA, Ryanair, easyJet and flyBE are quite helpful. He's 25 and about to become a CA on a 737 or they are moving him to a CA on something else he's not sure yet.

At the end of the day your paying for the name. It's like Flightsafety in Vero, Over Priced, Over Rated, Over Subscribed by BA Captains son's and daughters who think it helps them to get where they want to be. Hell it does but man the debt is massive at the end, look at about 80,000 - 100,000 GBP by the end of it all.

If I had a rich uncle then I'd have gone there, I didn't I went to another school where I learnt more, how to actually fly a twin on one engine because it failed on more than 2 occasions, Gear Failures on Cessna's it's all character building those places produce drones who all learnt it the same with no need to make a decision when something goes wrong.

The 14 Exams for the f/ATPL are Tedious as well, Currently reading Air Law and it's going back to laws from the early 1900's and discussing the evolution of the Laws from Marine Law. Helpful when I'm flying a 177RG with a Broken Gear Extension Push Rod

Avoid JAA if you can!!!

Oh, I'm only dabbling at reading this JAA rubbish. I'm not going to be taking the exams it's just something I was reading while we had an 8 hour powercut here while waiting for the looters to come and steal my TV. Plus it's something that is keeping me sane while looking for a job in Canada. I do know for sure than when doing any of the exams the candidates aren't allowed to use there Flight Computer for any of the calculations which I thnk is stupid personally, which means you have to remember far too many conversion factors and formulae.

That buddy of mine at OA doesn't remember even a quarter of what he learnt in the 11 Month Ground school which I am not surprised at.

It might not be ideal, but surely JAA is the only option...as far as I know there is no Canadian or US frozen ATPL - you can only get a CPL which won't get you a job at an airline until you have lots of experience, whereas with a frozen ATPL you will walk into a FO job right after finishing the course if you are any good. At least, that was the case last year, but things might have changed now, so you may want to think carefully before spending over $100k on the course.
