It is aircraft specific.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Type ratings: seat specific?
The type rating is for the aircraft. If you do a SIC type rating (right seat ride) it does not qualify you as PIC on the aircraft. According to TC they expect higher standards from guys doing a PIC ride. I guess those standards are at the discretion of the examiner.
Is dat Pan Am on the runway, Isn't that veird?

No, the standards are not at the discretion of the examiner.

If you fly your ride from the right seat as an FO, you will get the type rating and there are no restrictions printed on your licence. However, you will have to do a captain ride before flying as PIC.

...in a commercial air service.
Just to finish your sentence.
Re: Type ratings: seat specific?
Your licence will just show the type
But some examiners will put weather it was a Capt or FO ride on your PPC card.
