Air Canada jazz pilots hours
I know that a typical regional airline pilot such as Jazz will have a 12-14 hour duty day but what type of scheduling would he/she receive? Would you fly to one destination all day long or would it be mixed up??

it is usually mixed up. we have from 1 day to 4 day pairings. usually from 3 legs to 7 leg days on the dash8.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
Typically you'll be scheduled between 75-80 credit hours per month, which works out to 65-75hrs in the logbook. Im on the RJ in YYZ, been averaging 75hrs/month so far.
I just did a 4 day pairing. Day 1 was YYZ-YQR-YYC-YVR-YEG. Day 2 was YEG-YZF-YEG-YMM. Day 3 was YMM-YYC-YWG-YQT. And Day 4 was YQT-YYZ-EWR-YYZ. Im now on 10 days off, before I go back and do a similar 4 day pairing but Ill be off to Houston instead.
Your pairings will depend mostly on how you bid and what your seniority is. I usually get lucky because I like to do what most people hate- low credit pairings, few legs per day, and lots of flying to the USA like EWR, LGA, PHL, ATL, etc. This month I wanted to see the west coast so I bid on those pairings. Some guys here can fly as much as 10 hrs in 1 day, but Id prefer not to do that. I like having my work spread out over the month as opposed to cramming it in 8-10 days of work. On the RJ, you can do as few as 1 leg per day, or as many as 7.

Sorry for beginning up old threads here. C-HRIS, sounds like lots of fun. Do you happen to know if the Dash does pairings similar to these. Or at least pairings where they be gone for a few days or even on the west coast if they were based somewhere in the east?I just did a 4 day pairing.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
I think some of the YYZ and YUL dash guys get a bit of variety between east coast flying. The YYC and YVR guys do similar flying I think too. If youre on reserve, you could get sent out west or east depending on where they need you. Ive seen YYZ dash guys on overnites in YSJ, and seen YUL dash guys heading to YAM or BWI. So they do mix up the pairings a little bit.dream_big wrote:Sorry for beginning up old threads here. C-HRIS, sounds like lots of fun. Do you happen to know if the Dash does pairings similar to these. The YYZ dash flying I think seems more interesting than the YUL or YHZ. Then again, I love the USA flying, most guys hate it, so it's a personal thing. Out of YYZ on the dash youll go as far as Richmond, VA. The YVR dash guys seem to have a lot of fun though, lots of cool mountain and valley flying.
If you ask me, the best flying is to the USA- EWR, LGA, DCA, BOS, PHL, ATL, CLT, RDU, and ORD are my top spots to go.

I don't "like" flying there, I "love" it! I think Ive been to EWR close to 10 times in the last month. Haven't been to ORD in a few weeks unfortunately. Bidding reserve is great for that sort of flying!Inverted2 wrote:You like EWR and ORD? Yuck!

., ., .... I don't think you're pissing any of us off, but it's a little surprising how quickly you became a Jet Pilot (please note the capital letters...Jet Pilots are VERY important)!
Most of us on the Dash don't feel as though we're missing out on anything. Personally, I'm a big fan of staying in my own time zone (with the occasional jaunt out to the Maritimes for variety). You guys can have your cheap drinks in IAH...we'll just drink for free in CLE! Oh, and while we're at it, maybe we'll go catch an Indians game...or a Cavs or Browns game (all less than 10 minutes walk). I'll think of you next time I'm sitting at Papa Cheney's in Windsor, while you're probably still waiting for a wheels up time to one of your big fancy high-density airports.
Just remember that different isn't always better, Junior.
You can have your 3+ hour legs...I'd rather stretch my legs by doing an extra walk-around. Oh, and how are all those smoking hot F/A's treating you? Heard you were a little disillusioned...
Remember where you came from, little one... wheeeeeeeeee!
Swerved.

In a world full of people, only some want to fly. Isn't that crazy?
Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
lol...You beat me to the punch, Swerved. I love being Dash Trash! We got stuck in YSB a couple of weekends ago so I got a 36 hour layover at home...ain't that a shame! I was talking with a couple of RJ FOs the other day and they were telling me some of the horror stories of flying with some of the "Sky Gods"....4 hours to IAH, but don't you dare pull out a newspaper (or talk to me, in some cases!)...just about made my jaw drop! Anyway, to each his own, but chasing metal will always leave you craving the next biggest or fastest thing. Lifestyle is the way to go. lol..I say that as I'm in the midst of doing five straight stand-ups to YTS...gotta love being junior!
And to the guy/gal wondering about how much we actually fly, over the last year or so I've averaged ~45-65 hours in the log book each month on the dash in YYZ. That's includes flying a block, plus a few months on reserve.

We Dash guys have a saying about the RJ: "We love it!"
Guess why

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
On the dash and reserve I've seen YVR YYC and YUL pairings. It all depends what crew sched needs. For variety though YYZ is the best dash base, KDET KBOS and KBWI one day the next you're in YTS and YAM. Problem is though when the weather goes down the RJ gets coffee time and the dash goes fly'n.

Oops, I mean DTW, force of habit from days past, I've only been there twice in the last few years. Either gets canceled or just don't get paired on it.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
Actually...two of my favourite approaches are at two of those airports. River Visual into DCA and the Expressway Visual into LGA (especially at night). Not necessarily my favourite airports but hand flying those approaches is fun!

Id take any of those airports over going to YQT, YMM, YSJ, YQB, etc in a heartbeat. The scenery on the expressway visual into LGA is awesome, you see absolutely everthing in NYC. Ill admit DCA is the biggest pain of all, but the sights on the visual approach are cool. And PHL has the aircraft carriers on short-final.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
Over all, the Scenery in the U.S anywhere you go is 100% better, except for maybe kelowna but I don't know I haven't been there.
On the other hand, you ALWAYS have ground stops/delays, 62 radio changes flying from yyz-dca/ewr, etc. no stop chatter, inpatient controllers. The list goes on.
SOOO I'll take my yyz-ywg-yqr-yvr-yzf's on my pairing, the rockies are awesome and peiceful.

What are the longest legs the dash and RJ do? Is it in the SOPs that you can't read the paper or other non aviation related literature in the cockpit?El Comat wrote: I was talking with a couple of RJ FOs the other day and they were telling me some of the horror stories of flying with some of the "Sky Gods"....4 hours to IAH, but don't you dare pull out a newspaper (or talk to me, in some
