Looking to buy portable GPS, any suggestions?
As the title says, I'm looking to buy a portable GPS to be used on cross country flights. Seeing as they are so expensive, I don't really want to just through all my money into something I will regret in a year or two. I've been looking at some of the Garmin models, but I am looking for experiences of people who have used one, or own one and what their recommendations would be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you're cheap get a (monochrome) G196. I have
a couple of them. If you have the bucks, and want
XM weather/radar/radio, look at a 396 or 496. I'd
also look at Bendix/King's new AV8OR:

I also have the Lowrance 600C and love it. With any of the portables you will have to put up with the glare on the screen if you are using an aircraft with a bubble canopy...or a bald head
Re: Looking to buy portable GPS, any suggestions?
The 296 is a very good tool, I used it for the past 2 year now and havent had a problem. I think they sell it for a little over 1000$ now, also there is a new 495 which is the same thing but you get taxi diagrams and faster processor.
Good Luck!

I have the garmin 296 and it is awsome! Colour screen, terrain awarness, HSI, automotive feature and lots more for a decent price.

Try Aviation World for the Lowrance 600C...I've had mine for 3 years and you get the Canadian Createmap6 with it for high resolution maps. I paid $600.00 for it and by now the price may have come down
Re: Looking to buy portable GPS, any suggestions?
I agree the Lowrance 600C represents the best value for money. However, also consider the support from the makers of these things. A while back I was also looking into the merits of the various models. My emails for further information were promptly and fully answered by Lowrance staff. Similar emails to Garmin were never answered. Garmin was too rude, lazy and incompetent to bother answering a query from a prospective customer! I think that indicates the sort of after-sales service you are likely to get. Go with Lowrance.

I too have the 600c. When I got it, I also was given the Canadaian maps, and the USA maps. Awesome little unit for flying. I keep all the flight info on the card they provide ( its a small card, and you cannot transfer the terrain warning to another card which sucks ass). I put some road maps onto a 1 gig card and they work pretty damn good. However it is an aviation GPS so you wont get TomTom like directions. More of a moving map.

I got a G196 Me Likey.
She’s built like a Steakhouse, but she handles like a Bistro.

This is what we have for the front seat of the Husky and it is my favorite portable GPS, been using them ever since the company first started selling them.

My vote goes to the 496, avertything you ever wanted is right there! I take my back up 495 also on ferry trips, just in case.
Both very easy to use.

+1 for the Lowrance 600c.
Great VFR unit, and it worked great, works even better with the auxiliary antenna attached, but my cord has started to fray a little bit. (still works)
overall satisfied.

Got the Lowrance 1000, awesome unit, big screen and lots of different pages. Super easy to program and update.
Selling it, 1000hrs on a metro in BC and it never let me down...new employer has good equipment so won't be needing it any longer.
PM me if interested
