WTF? Navy shoots at student pilots!?!

Post by YoungPunk »

This sounds pretty strange!

The Carp Flying Academy Inc. Diamond Aircraft Industries Inc. DA-20-C1 Katana aircraft was departing on a VFR flight from Toronto (City Centre) Airport (CYTZ) to Ottawa (Carp) Airport (CYRP). The Canadian Flyers International Inc. Cessna 172R aircraft was departing on a local VFR flight from Toronto (City Centre) Airport (CYTZ). NAV CANADA staff reported that a Canadian naval vessel entered the Toronto inner harbour area for runway 08 and fired multiple "shots." The Katana was climbing out and had to make a sharp left turn towards a built-up area to avoid the ship and smoke. The Cessna 172 aircraft was climbing out behind the Katana aircraft and also had to deviate north to avoid the area. Ops. impact -- unknown.

The most incredible thing about this report is that our navy
really has weapons? Are they tools of peacekeeping?

Reminds me of the time that "Pirate Tobin" captured all
those Spanish fishermen. Great sound bites for the evening
news. As I recall they ended up having to issue an apology
to the Spaniards, quietly pay millions of dollars to settle
lawsuits, etc.

I really doubt that they were shooting at aircraft. The were probably doing something else that someone thought was live firing. I have seen this before.

Yes it was an exercise. It was NOTAMed, can't remember the number.

They couldn't get a radar lock on the Katana I bet, now missing the 172... no excuse for that!!!

No trees were harmed in the transmission of this message. However, a rather large number of electrons were temporarily inconvenienced.

Was it the HMCS Charlottetown? It was moored in the inner harbour over the weekend and was having an open house.

They were probably doing a salute by firing blanks as they entered harbour.

This shows why it's good to read the NOTAMs! You would also think that common sense would tell the pilots that there probably wouldn't be any live firing in Toronto Harbour (unless maybe the Russians have invaded).

Oh they wouldn't do that - the pilots would then have to start filing noise complaints in regard to the gunfire!

I remember the incident you're referring to. They actually hit it alot. But it's impossible to shoot something like that down because numerous small holes have no effect on it. The CF-18 has a deadly gunsight, and we used to annoy the Dutch target tows because we would routinely shoot the acoustic dart right off the cable on the first few passes. The rest of the sorties would have to cancel while he went back to get another one. The pipper is a real death dot.
