Part-time Univ Courses

Post by Pete »

Yes, I have searched...maybe I just dont have the patience...could be why I went to college instead of Univ.

Can someone with no interest of obtaining a degree enroll in Univ. credit courses that interest them? I want to further learn about a course that interests me, but with no real objective of being full-time or degree etc.

And if so, do I have to go through the same process a full-time applicant would? This is my biggest worry I graduated from college, did not take many Univ level courses in High school, I just want to pay...and attend, and learn....most school sites do not elaborate on this like Ontario Colleges do (part-time studies). Any guidance appreciated :D

Talk to the registrar's office (or a guidance consellor) about enrolling as a part time mature student. Assuming you have been out of school for awhile, that is most likely your best course of action. With decreasing enrollment at just about all post-secondary education institutions, it shouldn't be too difficult.

The less official, and costly, way to do it would be to just show up at the lectures, assuming they are fairly large classes (100 plus) nobody would really know. Obviously you wouldn't be able to credit the courses towards an degree.

For shit and giggles, I would also put some pressure on to see about getting transfer credits from your college education. Don't roll over to easily, the more credits they give, the less money you spend at their school so they can be dicks about it. I got nearly a full years worth of credits from my college diploma.

As has been said - check it out with a guidance counsellor at the university. If you're hard up for cash... being a pilot and all... if you're not aiming for a degree, you might even try "auditing" courses, which means you don't get a grade, but you can go to the lectures and participate without any issues. Might even be more what you're after. Also, depending where you live (i.e. if you're right by the university, you could probably walk into just about any first year class without anyone noticing (i.e. a large class w/200 people)... but don't tell anyone I told you that ;) My social psychology class is 300 people and I'm kicking myself for having paid!

You can audit a course at the online University-Athabasca University
Auditing AU Courses for Interest, not Credit

Rather than taking courses for credit, you may wish to audit AU courses. As an audit student, you will receive the same course materials package and academic support services as credit-seeking students, but you will not write exams. If you wish to move from audit to credit status, you must apply to do so to the Office of the Registrar before the mid-point of the course contract period. The course fees remain the same.

You can audit most courses at most universities. No credit for it, but no exams either.

I say enroll as a part time student and get credit for anything you take. You never know when it will come in handy.

With a college diploma, I'm sure you could get in at most places as a mature student.

Hell, Laurentian let me in! And if ISTP can do it, ANYONE can!
