Frozen ATPL

Post by robtowne »

I have a question regarding the "frozen" ATPL. If someone has written and passed the ATPL exams but doesn't have the required time, how long are the exams good for? I read in one of the posts that they are good for five years. I had been told before that if someone had a current PPC on an aircraft over 12,500 then they were good as long as you are current. Does anyone have any information on this? It's doesn't seem to be addressed directly on the TC site, but I am sure more astute people than me could find it. Thanks!

Frozen ATPL is not a Canadian term.

You have two years after writing the ATPL exams to complete the requirements for the issue of the license.

If you complete a 2 crew type rating within two years after writing the exams, the type rating will maintain the validity of the written exams until you meet all the other ATPL flight time requirements, even if it takes longer than two years.

OR, if you complete an Airline Transport Pilot Licence - Aeroplane Integrated course you have five years from the date of the completion of the course as opposed to the two-years.

(2) Subsection (1) does not apply in respect of examinations that are required for the issuance of

(iii) for the issuance of an airline transport pilot licence — aeroplane, an airline transport pilot licence — aeroplane integrated course was successfully completed during the 5-year period preceding the date of the application for the licence and a course completion certificate was issued.
