I was looking at the number of pilots licensed (and in force) in Canada on the horrible TC site...and figured that less than 2% of people in Canada fly...does that sound right? Pretty neat figure if thats true...I thought it was higher.

Why is that neat ???
IMHO more people should fly. t quite amazing that a geography like Canada, and yet only 2% of the populus flies.. Thats shameful!!
The industry of aviation does not only revolve around Airline companies, the industry needs more pilots, more planes, more AME more instructors..
In any case I find your comment a bit shortsighted..

Neat...for lack of a better word, interesting would have been better...or surprised...I would have thought it was a way bigger figure than that. I'm a big advocate of GA in Canada, and had nothing to do with the question.

Actually, I think you missed a decimal place. The actual number is less than 0.2%, or 1/10th of your estimate, if I'm not mistaken. It's a shame.

2% is too high. I think the other postert is right. Something like 1/4% sounds about right. Let's say that Canada has 30 million people (guessing here) then 2 % would be like 600,000 pilots (that's the amout the US probably has) We take 1/10th of that, and we should be sitting at about 60,000 pilots. If US has 300 million people, then the numbers are consistent across the board.
Maybe 99.75% of the people out there were smart enough not to get into this field or hobby.

I think if more people would be in the hobby, the industry as a whole would be more vibrant and alive. Maybe if the numbers where greater we would be able to help reduce costs.
Strenght is in numbers, and thus we are easy prey..

Isn't it the other way around? having less of a kind means they're rare thus worth a LOT ?? like jewelry? I don't know that is my interpretation of something worthy. Something rare, good, and cool

Perhaps you are thinking in the sense that fewer pilots better oppertunity of getting a job. Or worth more money.
Supply and demand.. In that sense yes and no.. It depends on how jobs available and how many pilots are availble to fill such jobs. zNot the percentage of the populus that is flying.

Definite shortage of 200hr wonders, thats why the demand is so high...
