Re: South Africa
The hardest part might be getting a work permit and of course converting/validating your licence to a south african one.
Re: South Africa
piloterror,
legoman's right, it will be hard to convert to a south african license... unless you are south african or you're married to one.
your best bet hands down is Botswana (Maun) or Tanzania. The only problem is your PIC time... you will probably get stuck on a 206 for a year then move over to a caravan. But don't worry, it's great flying the 206 around to all the camps.

Re: South Africa
The guys are right. Converting a Canadian license to a South African one is a bugger. Easier to convert to a JAA license.
However, there are lots or parts of Africa where they are looking for pilots. And the 206 for about C$400 a month is typical starting for someone with 200 PIC. The good news is thats lots of moeny to live on and you can fly in places that are truely magic to see from the air.
I think I have all the conversion requirements to an SA licence somewhere. Let me know if you are going this route and I will try and dig them up for youl

Hey mate, don't waste your time in Botswana, pay is awful, (2 year bond on a C206, and nearly three years on a C208B) Its beautiful for sure hands down the best safaris there. With your time on DHC6 you wouldn't have to much trouble getting on with Regional in Tanzania, based out of Arusha or a Caravan seat based out of Dar Es Salaam.
Unless your doing your ATPLS it isn't sooo hard to get your license converted in SA, big companies are in Lanseria. Quila, Solenta, NAC, Executive Turbine and Naturelink will be your best bet. As a Canadian you will never fly out of SA, only do contract work in other countries. THey will however ask that you do your ATPLS as soon as possible, 7 exams all tough from what I hear but if you study like an other exam it shouldn't be too difficult. PM me for details.
Good luck,

Re: South Africa
I just got back from a safari trip to Botswana...(day job paid for it not my flying career)...
Our charter outfit (Sefofane) was based out of Maun in the northern part. Lots of piloting jobs available according to the pilot I bought drinks for at the bar in one camp. He was saying 600hrs with 300hrs PIC would be good enough for the Carravan.
Get good at your softfield ops and crosswinds, as well as dodging the elephant poop...

Sefofane WILL NOT hire you with that much time for the VAN. I know that for a pretty solid fact, (I was in front of the Swana CP when she told me).
Tanzania is a great place, but the Okavango Delta in Maun from what I hear by other colleagues is better then any other Game Reserve you will find out here on the East Coast.
I feel pretty blessed that Im on a Caravan.piloterror wrote: Do you think I'd have a decent shot of scoring a job.....lets say even on a Caravan
