Moving to Yellowknife... Help please!
Hey Everyone! Heading to YZF for a new job in the next few weeks. Hoping for some help in locating apartments/accomodations of some type. Also any advice on anything about living up there is appreciated. If anyone is looking for a roomie or to rent out a basement or whatever, just drop me a line.
Ideally I'd need a place in December or January on a permanent basis. Going to be back and forth a bit between now and then. Anyhow. Thanks for all your help!
Dave

Get a used snow goose parka before you head up there.
As for appartments, I'm sure you'll have a PM soon enough.
Have fun, Enjoy the cold.

Got one on the way... Thankfully... just couldn't fit into the medium that's for sale on here
Re: Moving to Yellowknife... Help please!
Depending on the company, many have a discount/payroll deduction for the goose. Maybe get a new one.

Everyone says the Snow Goose parka is a must have, but I got through last winter on the ramp just fine without one, so it isn't too big of a deal. I am getting one this year though, and at a great discount through work.
Re: Moving to Yellowknife... Help please!
you don't NEED a parka.. but they sure are nice. I'd also recomend makin sure to keep those feets warm. Find some good boots that you can wear all the time. Basically just try a ton of them on till you figure out what works best.
I LOVE my northface mcmurdo! Best thing I've bought for this job. Next to the downfilled mitts of course.
Enjoy the north. YZF can be a great place

Working the ramp without the hardcore gear is one thing. You can run into the hangar and warm up, but you sometimes don't get that option when you are in the middle of bumble fark nowhere, and the airplane is frozen stiff, I'm getting cold just thinking about it.....stoooopid winter

Canada Goose. CANADA Goose. Sheesh.

Enjoy your stay there.... I hope things are as good when I was there ( 78-87) . Understand, things from the flyin' point are not as fair. Was alot of fun and could live like a 'king", good luck though, The north is a great challenge for you later in life as you look back
How do you go 205 kts TAS on 32 gal/hr without turbos!

What Raven said is right, working the ramp doesn't require a spacesuit. A decent pair of insulated covies, Red Baron gloves and a balaclava will usually suffice, but when you're away from base on flights there's no such thing as too much cold wx gear .. you never know when you're going to be stuck in the cold.
As far as I know there are lots of rooms for rent in town. Check out sites like YKtrader.com and I think Northern News Service has a site with some classified ads.
Budget for a cheap sled (or a nice one if you don't mind financing forever, lol). it'll make winter more enjoyable.
