Gun Sales Spike

Post by Icebound »

...

Gun sales in the US have spiked, coincident with the election of Obama as president.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/st ... 48,00.html

As explained by an executive of some-gun-association-or-other:

"One thing we do know is when unemployment starts to climb, hunters tend to hunt more. They have time on their hands....."

...
for sure...

I think the reasoning is that many people expect gun control
legislation to tighten up considerably in the USA, now that
the house, senate and executive are all controlled by the
democrats, not the gop.

I think every household should own a gun. Something fairly simple, like a semi automatic .22, or a Winchester 30/30. Everybody (from a reasonable age) should know where it is, and how to use it. No, really. You can hug trees, and eat granola all you want but, you just never really know now, do you?

Dude, here's a thought; the government (i.e. society, i.e. the rest of us) weren't put on this Earth to look after you. In other words, you should be prepared to look after yourself. A strong society requires its individual members to be strong.

bzh, are you for real? Yeesh. :P

I have to agree with Hedley..

Edited to add that I agree with Doc, as well - with emphasis on HOW TO USE a firearm. Not to be confused with WHO to use it on (I'm not encouraging irresponsible firearm use), but rather how they function.

As opposed to this incoherent right wing argument?

"Dude, here's a thought; the government (i.e. society, i.e. the rest of us) weren't put on this Earth to look after you. In other words, you should be prepared to look after yourself. A strong society requires its individual members to be strong."

How exactly does owning a gun make you strong?

All it does is massage the inner Clint Eastwood in you and make you feel like the swaggering hero. Owning a gun doesn't automatically endow you with the judgement to not be a danger with it, nor does taking a course. It's nothing but blustering machismo that makes you think you're defending the homestead against the lawless hordes. You're more likely to shoot yourself in the foot. Or worse.

That, Rockie, is your eloquent opinion, and you
are welcome to it - as well as your individual
choice of not purchasing a firearm.

However. Regardless of how good your intentions
are, or how firmly believe you are correct, you
are NOT entitled to force your opinions and
choices upon others.

You're absolutely right Hedley, I'm not and I don't.

Rockie, I wasn’t referring to owning a gun, I don’t own one myself. I was referring to Che up there who thinks we’ve elected a bad government because it won’t take care of him, and yet can’t articulate that thought above a school yard level.

ok boys fire another round...

I vote for a gouvernement that look after my interest not one that needs me to look after buisness.... look after me first and let business look after themself, if there is money to be made, buisnessman will be there.... If I need held, my elected gouvernement will be there, if juck chinese toy are in my country, I expect my gouvenement to ban that crap, I expect my gouvernement to make sure the food I eat is safe, I expect my gouvernement to encourage us to do sports and eat better and offer public transportation in the interest of the comunity and not the private sector, I expect my gouvermenet to ban any weapons not required for hunting, I expect cops to be available where needed, I expect poor people to be looked after so the police doesn't have to do extra work and put them in jails that I have to pay for.

I want to live in Canada and pay the taxes, as long as my gouvenement looks after me.....

Now go F.... Off all you red neck freaks.

PS:(If we had to leave in a gouvenement-less world with no taxes and no protections, i'll kill you first from 2000ft, easy target, no law suit standard caliber)

now time for the next beer.. :drinkers:

Every Swiss male over the age of about 17 has an automatic weapon at home. You don't hear about bands of wandering Swiss, armed to the teeth, murdering or pillaging or forming drug gangs.

Nor do you hear of a lot of home invasions in Switzerland.

Get over the gun thing.

Paranoia is OK until they come to get you (that's a joke I just made up).

Old and meaningless argument. Every Somali male over the age of 12 has five AK-47's and a couple of RPG's at home.

It's effective laws that make a society safe, not a well armed population.

Buds, let's try not to quote out of context her shall we? Given that I was responding to:
pilotbzh wrote:Fend for yourself, the gouvernement has stopted looking afer you
I was not saying that owning a gun makes you stronger. I was responding to pilotbzh's belief that somehow the government is required to look after all of us, and making the suggestion that we should perhaps instead instill an attitude of aggressive self reliance in individuals. A very coherent argument.

Every Swiss male of age 17 and there abouts does not have an automatic weapon at home. Long standing urban myth. If they are serving in the military they can bring them home. This country is not awash with weapons.

You do not hear about home invasions because home invasions anywhere do not make the news. Arguably, the most frequent crime here is home invasions.

On a per 100,000 people basis, the murder rate in Geneva is close to places like Chicago or Atlanta. In actually numbers, 8-9 a year and the population is only 179,000.
