Don't really have any first hand info, but i've watching the fleet land and take off makes me think i've found some gap in the space time continum. if you want to fly old radials, that is definitely the place to be. if i were offered a job there, I don't think i could bring myself to say no.

If they screw up your pay you have to chase after them like hell to get it. When it comes to your benefits you have to go search out people do all the paperwork for them, and then stay after them for months to go F***ing mail it. Sorry Hooked but my DC-3 experience was the primary reason for me getting my first "jet job" (outside of Canada). Things I learned flying the DC-3 have kept me out of trouble over the years. I'm proud to have DC-3 time in my logbook. I've never flown a turbo-prop - just piston and jet.

Just for your info - worked for Joe for 7 years. Started on the ramp and left as DC-3 Captain. I even have a two page letter of reference from him.

I can't believe how off topic the responses got to rolowang's question. Also Hooker, you have to be the most immature pilot out there I hope I never have to share the sky with you. You should come up to Yellowknife rolowang work for Buffalo for a couple of weeks meet the guys and make a decision for yourself. If you can't stand it then you can always try to get a job at Tindi, Sunwest, or Summit. Also we only have one guy on the ramp at Buffalo and there will be upgrades for certain people so if you sitck it out then you'll be flying something big and loud in six months to a year. Whatever decision you make good luck.

I think it simpler to say if you're a city boy with a city attitude, scared of hard work and don't like getting yelled at, do not go to Buffalo. It may actually ruin you. However, if you wanna fly some cool, old machines with a bunch of good dudes and you think you can fit in (very important), then give it a try. Furthermore, if you are scared of hard work, go to Tindi... from what I hear, you pretty much have to be handi-capped to not make it through that place.

Also, with regards to pay at Buffalo... rampies don't get that much, but I've been told their captains make a fortune. Ramping is supposed to suck to a degree.

The guy who was in charge of the 215's is now moved on. Heard he was a great guy as well, but never had much of a chance to meet him. And it's not the hard work, or getting yelled at that makes people want to quit buffalo. You'll find that at any job. You really have to work there to realize why some people hate anything and everything green with all 206 bones in their body. And as for "ramping is supposed to suck to a degree", I realize that the whole purpose is to test you and to find out what you're really made of, but is a 7 on, 7 on schedule(no, thats not a typo) really worth it for 2000 a month? Sorry, I forgot, you start making more once you become a flight attendant. And you will.

Do the math on that schedule! There is a difference between putting your time in on the ramp and getting raped up the ass. For the sake of himself and the industry ...I hope the other ramp guy quits and then they are left with no one. Maybe they will have to raise the pay a bit then.

if you are still looking at this forum here is what you can expect from the big green ,and you can take it from a fellow captain working there

so to be concise and brief you will work very hard in difficult environment most of the time , specially at this time of the year , do not expect a pat on the back as you will not be neither the first or last guy in this situation but aviation as it is, particularly in this downturn of economic time I would say if offered the job and your hunger to get into a cockpit is insatiable take the job see if you can take all the difficult hours, after a while you can always walk away if it is not your cup of tea. there are plus and minus as you have seen above . take it with a grain of salt everybody uses this forum to express THEIR feelings more than just passing info I went into it myself fully aware of the perceived reputation of this company but the pilots and rampies are generally a good bunch and I am still working there.

When I started on the ramp there the going joke was none of the other rampies in town would never mess with the Buffalo guys at the bar because they had so much rage and frustration bottled up they could kill someone. We did work hard but we also played hard. The working conditions are tough, definatly not 9-5, but the group of guys you work with is really close and will help one another out.
Buffalo really helped me, I learned so many things there as a copilot that saved my life countless times later on and I didn't have to learn them on my own scaring the crap out of myself on the way I had someone with thousands of hours sitting beside me to show me how to do things properly. As far as pay is concerned it is a little on the low side to start but once you start flying it definately gets better. The paycheck is always on time.
If I had to do it all over again I would still go back to Buffalo.

Porky, a.k.a. O.J. Wieben of Superior Airways hired me as potential Beech 18 driver in 1978. (The old big yellow carrot treatment!) When I got to "Wiebenville" I was made the airport manager, read swamper. There were no rampies, only the last three hulks of previously immaculate DC-3's parked in the weeds since the 50's and 60's when Porky made his first million during the Dew-Line construction with 21 Dakotas and one DC-4.

Over the next six weeks I learned more about float flying, having fun and making money with one old Beech 18.

All that for $ 4.-/hr!!! 15 000 of round engine driving later, I think back at those times fondly and above all, there are many times when I am very grateful to be able to recall certain safety pointers that Porky burned into my memory bank at that time.

AND whether you believe it or not, money is NOT that important! I had no expenses at work. Hell, I even kept my woman and the bank happy by paying the mortgage on a Vancouver house!

What kind of ballpark salary range are we talking for captains?
