CALGARY — WestJet Airlines Ltd. flew through last month's financial and economic gloom with a 14.4-per-cent increase in its passenger traffic compared with a year ago.
Canada's second-largest airline said Wednesday it booked its best-ever November load factor with 76.1 per cent of its seats filled in the seasonally slack month.
That came as the 14.4-per-cent rise in revenue passenger miles to 1.06 billion was carried on a fleet whose capacity expanded 13.5 per cent to 1.39 billion available seat miles.
“Our November load factor and continued growth in revenue passenger miles indicate to us that the Canadian market has a healthy balance of travellers and aircraft seat capacity,” WestJet chief executive officer Sean Durfy said.
He added that fourth-quarter revenue per available seat mile “is tracking comparably to last year.”
WestJet's fleet of 76 Boeing 737s — slated to grow to 121 by 2013 — has posted a year-to-date load factor of 80 per cent, off from 80.8 per cent in the first 11 months of 2007.
Seriuosly though, in past recessions we always saw our industry be one of the first to get hit. This time it seems still positive. Maybe the worse is yet to come, who knows? Now if only my guys can get smarter about fuel buying. Good work WJ.
