Gorgeous P-38
Not sure if this belongs in "General Comments about Boeings and Airbuses" but:

P.S. I'm surprised the Germans are willing to ante up the dough
for a P-38. The warbird crowd strongly tend to favour their
national aircraft ... the Americans love their P-51, the Brits go
gaga over the Spitfire and the Hurricane, everyone in Canada
went crazy over the Sabre, the Germans I know are quite proud
of the bf109 ...

Apparently you could steal these for next to nothing at the war's end. Bill Lear bought one and pretty much tought himself to fly in it. I think it's one of the prettiest birds around, and even prettier in a non-military livery.
Re: Gorgeous P-38
I think you're very right. Didn't they bulldoze a bunch and just bury them in the south pacific? how tragic. BRAND new they were...
Glad to see such a fine bird brought back and made all beautiful! Good on em for putting it together so well.
My fav however is still the corsair for looks.

Nice pics....can't remember some detail I heard about that aircraft: because of the disrupted war-time supply lines, they had to make both motors identical-so you could switch either failed one out at the front from a common store-...made either engine loss in flight a critical engine loss.. ..something like that....

Re: Gorgeous P-38
Not just the south pacific; apparently there's lots of old war birds rotting away under ground here in Canada too. It sure is a pretty airplane; though I wouldn't want to be the guy who has to clean and polish it after every flight!Rowdy wrote:I think you're very right. Great article in the latest Pilot Journal about this aircraft. Aside from the breathtaking exterior, the cockpit looks nothing like it's wartime original: Garmin 530/430, Crew Alerting System on the brow of the dash, etc. Great article on the past of the ac as well.
