Stick in the right hand and throttle in the left.
Ok, so I can't solo from the right seat in a Katana...what planes give a person the thrill of a stick with the throttle on the left? Decathalon, Cub...what else? Please don't say silly things like F-18 or Spitfire...affordable planes.

The POH says it is to be flown solo from the left hand seat.

is it still YF-22 or just F-22?Is a YF-22 Raptor out, because if you buy one of those i'll definately be a better friend by being less sarcastic.
Re: Stick in the right hand and throttle in the left.
i really dont think anything out there other than a military plane will give you the "thrill" of flying HOTAS. sure you might get the throttle on the left hand but not really a huge thrill.

Any of the Vans Aircraft models (RV3, RV4, RV6/6A, RV7/7A, RV8/8A, RV9/9A, RV10, RV12) can be modded to include the throttle quadrant on the left hand side.

Re: Stick in the right hand and throttle in the left.
I think you'll probably find the left throttle/right stick combo more "thrilling" than the right throttle/left stick for about three or maybe four flights. Of course the ladies will be impressed, but ladies don't know anything about aeroplanes.*
Seriously, though, is a Cessna 185 in your price range? If so you could probably have a heck of a time in a Cessna 188 AG Wagon. No passengers, though. Or there's Huskies, champs, chiefs, citabrias, or chipmunks, tiger moths (I know, rare and expensive), I just googled "tandem seat civilian aircraft" and found a whole sea of them.
*relax, Ladies! I was employing "sarcasm"!

Great replies guys,
Didn't think of the Rv 6,7,8s...and I'm sure the Ag Wagon would be a blast, but it would be nice to take a ladyfriend up once in a while. Let's keep it under say, 200 grand so I'm afraid the Raptor is out. Huskies, Champs and Cheifs are all awesome suggestions.

All the military and sprayplanes I flew were set up that way. There are a few two seat conversions available, and a quite a few military surplus trainers (and sundry other ones).

C-188 Ag Truck - FUN to fly.

Hint: Whoop, whoop, whoop....

(Actually the ones that make that sound have two blades, but the real fun comes with five....)

Re: Stick in the right hand and throttle in the left.
Zlin 242!!! Doesn't matter if you sit in either the left or right seat, both positions have a throttle on the left.

Re: Stick in the right hand and throttle in the left.
Not sure I agree with that but since I've not flown a military jet can't say for sure. Certainly bang for buck (~60K USD) there is no more fun to be had than a single seat Pitts which of course have the throttle on the left and stick where it belongs.i really dont think anything out there other than a military plane will give you the "thrill" of flying HOTAS. sure you might get the throttle on the left hand but not really a huge thrill.

Also if your only criterion is speed and + G's I suppose you are correct but if you want to include the full flight envelope of -G's and going backwards/tumbles etc. you really need to include stuff like the Extras and current king of the hill the MX-2 (300K USD). Check out this MX-2 video and just try to follow through with what is going on.

Aeronca Chief's are not a stick, they have dual control columns.Meatservo wrote:I think you'll probably find the left throttle/right stick combo more "thrilling" than the right throttle/left stick for about three or maybe four flights. The zenith ch 200's are fun, and have a center stick, with a left throttle.

Fleet's a great bird but the throttle's on the right. (middle of the pannel from the LH seat)black hole wrote:How about a good old Fleet Canuck

You could fly it from the rh seat but then you don't have brakes.
Put your Fleet skis I guess. Problem solved.

a/c under a 200k? Cubs, Champs, Citabria, Decathalon, Tigermoth, Fleet Finch, Stearman, Harvard, C180, C185, C195.
Most of your choices of the left throttle, right stick will be classic or vintage aircraft. All of the above have their pros and cons. Just have to figure out what type of experience your want form the aircraft.
Personally I have flown many configs but have always favoured the more traditional left throttle right stick set up.
If your are looking for any of the above bi-planes, pm me as I have many leads on vintage a/c.

Not many of these around- Varga Kachina 2150A- Some of the best flying I did was in this little bird. 150 HP Lycoming- 2 place- stick- certified canopy open in flight. Easy forgiving bird.
