I was clearing out some old junk/papers and the like the other day and came across a clipping on Martin Hartwell. Some may remember he was flying a B18 from Cambridge Bay to Yellowknife late fall of 1972 and hit a hill, the trip was a medivac and there were two aboriginal persons on board as well as a nurse. The pax died but Hartwell survived due to the efforts on the native boy (who was acknowledged as a hero). It is a long story; however I remember it as I was doing a private license in the Maritimes during that time..
Anybody know what ever happened to this gentleman (Hartwell), is he still alive. I understand he was a private person and didn’t talk about this very much, if at all.

Thks.

He and his girlfriend Susan had a small company in Ft Norman (Tulita) for years afterwards.

They later moved to Nova Scotia.

Hartwell's wife - I believe her name is Susan Charlotte Haley - wrote a book called "How to Start a Charter Airline". It's fictional, kind of entertaining when you consider where she got her ideas.

Last I heard, like JC said, they were in Nova Scotia. That's all I've got.

Martin and me drank a lot of beer in the Strange Range but he never talked about his flight nor did I ever ask him to.

I also would like to know where he ended up.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Don't know if it's true, but the grapevine told us that the Ops Manager for now defunct MJM Air, Jim Hartwell, is Martin's son ...
