Man sets himself on fire in downtown Calgary

Feb 12, 2009 09:15 PM

THE CANADIAN PRESS
CALGARY – Bystanders in downtown Calgary looked on in horror Thursday as a man doused himself with a flammable liquid, then set himself on fire.

An ambulance that was transporting another patient happened to drive by and attendants jumped out with extinguishers and put out the flames.

They called another ambulance to take the man to hospital.

"Our paramedics worked very aggressively to treat him on the way to hospital," said EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux.

"About 40 per cent of his body had been burned with second-degree burns along his back."

He was listed in serious but stable condition.

Witnesses said the man appeared to be upset and said something about being deported before he set himself alight.

A source told CTV Calgary he was about to be deported to Algeria.

However, Tracie LeBlanc, a spokeswoman with Canada Border Services Agency which enforces deportation orders, would not comment on whether it was investigating the case.

"At this stage CBSA does not have any public information regarding this individual," she said from Ottawa.

Witnesses described it as a horrific scene.

"I see some guy, he's in flames, all his body, backpack," said Fernando Sanchez, who captured the incident on his video camera.

"I was very scared because all of his body is in flames."

Before deporting this poor fellow to Algeria, I wonder if he'll be charged for violating Calgary's strict new anti-smoking bylaw.......

Yes. Yes. I know. I know. It has always been a failing of mine. I feel terrible now. Even though I used the phrase " this poor fellow"-that is just not enough. God is going to punish me for my smart mouth, no question about it.

I am going out on the deck for a smoke , and to think about all of my sins. Hopefully I won't have to burn in hell for it though.

Well you know the saying:

Teach a man how to start a fire, keep him warm for a day.

Set a man on fire, keep him warm for the rest of his life.

You know though, this kind of protest -you have to take seriously.

Compare it to your average, tree-hugger protester.
Chains himself to a tree.

Whoop.
dee.
doo.
Did the grade five 9/16" chain links smudge the cuffs on your hemp shirt?

Or your "I'm gonna starve myself" protestor.

pfft. Big deal. People pay big money to diet centers to do that all the time.

But douse yourself in gasoline, and light yourself on fire-okay: you sir, putting it all on the line, no-room-to-change-your-mind, are a protester I can take seriously.

Lucky that ambulance was there-with fire extinguishers. No kidding. Say you change your mind, after dousing yourself in gasoline, and lighting yourself on fire. What would I want to show up?
An ambulance with fire extinguishers. Whoa. How could that be just luck?

That self immolation by Vietnamese Buddhist monks actually worked on JFK -changed his policy....
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedi ... -Quang-Duc
...although we now know that North Vietnamese Communists had entered the monks' ranks and stirred up that crisis to higher levels than it would have been , that self immolation is one hell of an effective protest.

Hope this Calgary guy gets what he wants.

SO ,why where the good citizens of calgary not protected from this illegal immigrant .
He should have been on an airplane on his way home .Not running up medical bills when there are Canadian citizens waiting to see a Doctor.
The added costs of a broken system that takes years to get illegals deported.

Other countries can deport illegals in days and impose massive fines on airlines that transport undocumented criminals escaping justice in their home countries. He should be flown to his home country and let them pay for his self-inflicted wounds. There are too many deserving Canadians waiting for healthcare in this country to waste the shrinking money on criminals who will stop at nothing to invade our country illegally.

I've heard of getting hot under the collar but this is ridiculous. I hope he wasn't trying to make money; Calgary has strict anti panhandling laws too, "hey buddy, for five bucks I'll set myself on fire."
