Luzerne County has been rocked by a kickback scandal involving two elected judges who essentially jailed kids for cash. Many of the children had appeared before judges without a lawyer.
The nonprofit Juvenile Law Center in Philadelphia said Phillip is one of at least 5,000 children over the past five years who appeared before former Luzerne County President Judge Mark Ciavarella.
The two (judges) secretly received more than $2.6 million, prosecutors said.

The judges gave the kids long sentences in a "privately run Jail" that gave them kickbacks

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Regardless of problems in our system, Canadians ought not to be looking south of the border for any ideas on how to run a justice system. The "land of the free" has the largest percentage of their population imprisoned of any country in the world - by a large margin - including political prisoners. Currently, about 11% of their population will be sent to prison at some point in their lives.

Exactly Wilbur, but look where a pile of the US prisoners originated from, south of their border. Now look at all the problems developing south of the Canadian border and wonder. Hopefully Canada can learn from their mistakes.
The US should get tough and send all the illegals back where they came from, instead of supporting them. That would get rid of a sizable percentage of the prison population and California would not be in the dire straights they are today. This voting population is increasing so rapidly, the politicians don't have the gumption to stop the problem. Next, they should work on the other group that takes up the majority of prison space. A lot of this group are in their third and fourth generation of welfare. The US government seems to reward them with welfare dollars to have more babies. Over 70% of the mothers are unmarried. There are no father figures, no work ethic. If some how these trends could be changed, the US finacial crisis could be releived to a great extent. An unproductive welfare population is just a drag on a country. I expect things will only get worse with the current administration, as they are racing towards socialism at an unbridled pace. It looks like the sky is falling on the south side of the border.
