Seems to me it´s sort of human to make a mistake if there´s another airport on the approach path just before the intended destination. Probably what happened here with the Turkish.
Two more cases:
- Spantax in 1967. The CV990 with the chief pilot at the controls, destination Hamburg International. Just so happens that on the approach path, some 13 km before where he was going, there´s Hamburg Finkenwerder - and that´s where he put the plane down. The only runway was only 1360 meters long at the time
- TUR European Airways in 1991. The B727 was heading for Helsinki-Vantaa International and was cleared to land on rwy 33. Just so happens there´s a general aviation airport, Helsinki-Malmi on the approach path 4 nautical miles in front. Witnesses say he was at 250 ft AGL with gear and flaps down over the GA airport before realizing his mistake
In his defence, rwy 33 is the only rwy at Helsinki-Vantaa without an ILS so he was shooting a VOR DME approach but still, one look at his DME should have told him there were 4 more miles to go
Ever since that incident, there´s a special warning about not making a mistake about the 2 airports on the rwy 33 approach plate
