Molded Ear Plugs

I've heard great things about the molded ear buds with filter. Claims of carrying on conversations next to running engines and the like.

Anyone here have em? Use them?

I'm looking around to all the old drivers and they're all deaf. Starting to get slightly paranoid about my hearing.

Currently I've got the Bose headset. After a couple of hours I start getting the vise feeling. I'd like to go back to my super light telex, but it offers no protection. I'm wondering about getting the molded filtered ear buds, use the trucker mic and have great noise protection and limited pressure on the noggin.

I've never used them for flying, but I worked in a paper mill a few years back for awhile and we had a selection of about a dozen different types of ear plugs to choose from. You had to use them or go deaf... like my old man is right now.

Anyway, they work great. I had my preference and I think it depends on the shape/size of your ears because everyone used different ones. You could probably go into a supply store somewhere if you live in a larger city and get various samples and go from there.

I have used custom ear inserts for years -- 28DB passive isn't bad -- currently using the lightspeed -- very cool -- ear bud supports the boom mike -- it's comfortable and light -- has 2 ear buds for those who have intercom and you can listen to an mp3 player (for the rec av guys ) and radio traffic over rides and cuts off the tunes -- but for it to work perfectly you must go to the custom fitted ear buds -- the generic ones don't work well for supporting the mike.

I used to use molded plugs with DC 13.4 without a problem. The only con was when I took someone else and we'd use the same intercom. The volume would be loud for the other person.

I play around a lot of loud toys by nature of my job and they make a harrier sound like a kitten snoring.
Well worth the $30-50-whatever investment.

They are closer to 75-100 bucks these days. Well worth it though, I've been using convertables for about twenty years now. I get a new set molded ever six years or so. I use them for work, shooting, and take them flying for those occasions when I'm at an Avitat and there is a Lear spooling up near me.

$80 for mine. Used them around radials (loading and fueling ag) and could still hear people speaking at a reasonable volume through the noise of the engine. Flew with them a few times with an old dc headset, not really comfortable as the headset put pressure onto the plugs and right into the ear. I think many hearing aid places, if not all, can make them or get them for you.

I've got a pair and they work great. I play in a band and it takes the noise level down without altering the frequency range, so its not like regular foam ones where all the high stuff gets knocked out but the low still comes through. You can easily carry on a conversation with someone with them in. Also great for concerts. I think I paid around $100 for custom molded musicians ear plugs with the 20db filter.

Its also great if you find ear buds that will fit inside the filter holes so you can get custom fitted personal monitors. Or if you want to have your iPod sound better.

I have a pair of dBblockers and used them in a noisy machine shop.

I found the claims of being able to talk normally and hear normally to be false. They're the same as regular orange/yellow/green cheapie disposables.

The only thing that I found was that, for me, they were more comfortable to wear for 10 hours than the cheap ear plugs.

Same noise reduction. More comfortable.

As for the insurance covering the cost:only if i have a medical condition stopping my underwater work related activities. I'm scrounging to come up with some spectacular bull shit, but I'm at a loss.

Yellowknife would be a big city for you JC. You'd have to go a really big city!! Like Edmonton or Calgary. The beer's cheaper too!

I called the manufacturer and they passed me along to a local company, who have yet to return my call. Its called 911 s.o.s or something, I imagine they make workplace safety gear.

Give custom protect ear a call on their local number, the 1800 went to some woman who had no idea what I was talking about. They should be able to refer you to some local outlet.

Are there places that serve beer in Vancouver? And will they sell to people who aren't wearing Gortex or Hemp clothing?

I've used My molded plugs under my 13.4 for years now. Works great just got to pump the volume up. I also use my sony music in-ear buds when I want to listen to music they wrap around my ear and work great for extra protection when flying the 206. Pretty good way to go.

If you're in Ottawa you can get them fitted through Davidson Hearing Center. I'm pretty sure most hearing aid centers offer them.

I bought mine primarily for shielding my ears from the noise associated with the flying I do, like standing next to Honda pumps while we're pumping off fuel loads. I leave them in all day even while I'm flying as it helps cut down on the noise in the cockpit too. I wear them under a regular DC headset but I'm thinking of using them in conjunction with the Bose headset since the earplugs offer very good passive noise reduction.

I have custom molded, vented earplugs which set me back about $100. They were made by Emsee Labs but fitted and ordered through a hearing aid office in Ottawa. I originally wanted musicians earplugs with a 25 dB filter but the technician/doctor said that the vented plugs would work better in my work environment. The musician plugs are about $160.
