Offers to work for free

Offers to work for free do not impress operators. What we need are safe professional pilots. Consider that the operator you are likely to impress with offers to work for free is one you will want to avoid anyway.

I'm not a CP, but do help with hiring.
I seriously doubt my company is in the minority on this.

Offers to work for free is a bad idea. Offering or negotiating to job shadow for a day, or a couple days, a week maybe... that seems like a good idea to me. May be avery good approach as well. Get to know them, let them get to know you...

Where does the responsibility fall? Is it really pilots offering to work for free or an air operator suggesting that the pilot work for free?

Going out on a limb here. Stef is with HR somewhere? She had one of our little gems offer to work for free during an interview? Bet he's out seeking a 15K loan to go "shopping" for a job, as we speak?
Poor show folks. Across the board. Work for free. Buying jobs. Pride has certainly gone the way of the dinosaur....at least in this industry.
Not a rant......so before you even start.....stop.

Isn't there some sort of law about minimum wage, and wouldn't working for free be less than that and therefore illegal?

I want to know what pilot with low time I assume can afford to work for free. After just finishing your CPL at a club or a college who can afford it. I would like to be in the situation to be able to work for free but never would. Hell I am getting good money for working the ground and sometimes flying and have trouble making ends meet. So for the ones that want to work for free go back to school cause you obviously have the money to live might as well go get a degree and make some money cause you won't make SIHT loads in aviation unless you own a company and scrounge every penny!!!

Whats shocking is not the fact that low timers are willing to work for free, but airlines like British Airways are asking their staff to work for free.
I can understand a paycut, if the economy is bad, as all my friends in other industries have had to take one, but working for free is just stupid.

Don't work for free, simply have groups of employees take unpaid leave. If business is too slow to pay you it is too slow to need your labor. Or are they flying people for free now too?
