An American Airlines flight bound for Switzerland with 206 people on board was forced to land in Halifax Tuesday night because of a reported electrical fire in the plane's bathroom.
The Boeing 767-300 landed safely at the Halifax International Airport around 8:20 p.m. local time, according to airport spokesman Peter Spurway.
Bound for Zurich, Flight 64 took off from New York's JFK airport around 6 p.m. ET but ran into trouble less than an hour later when the cabin filled with smoke, according to reports.
"We've had reports of the fire being in the ceiling and being extinguished by a flight attendant with a fire extinguisher," Spurway told CTV News Channel Tuesday evening.
The Halifax airport was notified about the emergency at about 7:50 p.m.
No one was seriously injured during the incident, but one person required medical attention at the scene, Spurway said.
"This person was seen to by paramedics on the scene and then declined to go the hospital."
Earlier in the evening, reports said one person was taken to hospital.
Mary Frances Fagan, an American Airlines spokeswoman, said there were 194 passengers and 12 crew members aboard.
It wasn't clear if the flight would continue onto Zurich Tuesday evening.

Re: AA makes emergency landing in Halifax
We had just pushed back and were held in position with a front row seat for the landing. Kudos to the Halifax airport for what appeared to be a very well co-ordinated emergency response and to the crew of AA for their handling a stressful situation to a successful conclusion. Memories of Swissair must have been on their minds with smoke in the cabin.
