Re: jumpseating
I'm very sorry to hear this as I work for a Northern Ontario company and without this benefit my rotational schedule wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable. I definitely try to pass on my thanks to the crew any chance I get but there are some instances when it isn't possible. I've had a few occasions in recent memory when I've waited until most passengers had deplaned only to discover the crew had already left. I've also been denied access to the flight deck by flight attendants. Just the other day I was one of the last off but the cockpit door was still closed so I asked the flight attendant to pass on my thanks to the crew. Hopefully the message was passed on. I sincerely hope most people are at least making an effort to try as it's simple common courtesy.
Re: jumpseating
fingersmac I have also faced this dilemma. Most of the time I thank everyone from the check-in counter to the pilots and flight attendants but sometimes the pilots are busy or have already left the aircraft. I know they are busy readying the aircraft for the next flight and It just feels rude to interrupt them in the middle of their checks. I have started buying gift cards as a thank you to the crews and give them when I board. I really appreciate the seat when its available. A big thank you to all the Air Canada and Jazz pilots that have allowed me to jump seat. It never has been or will be taken for granted!

Here here! I just got back on a jumpseat pass today and i too always make sure to thank everyone involved...this is the return of a professional courtesy that has been lost on most companies for many years so let's all make an effort to keep this priviledge around...i for one do my very best to make sure anyone flying on a pass gets a seat on my aircraft. To all those AC folks who make it possible a BIG THANKS to you all and keep up the good work...if we all display this professionalism in whatever our position is, no matter how long we've filled it, then maybe we'll see some of the good ol days return.
Cheers

Re: jumpseating
I'd make sure that I thanked the crew/ people involved if I had the need to jumpseat..
I've flown on company passes (buddy passes) and I always made sure that I was polite etc. I also made an effort to say my thank you's but sometimes the crew doesen't want anything to do with a passenger it seems. This isn't all.. just some..
Whats with that?

Re: jumpseating
It might be worth posting on a company forum if you have one. I think it's an issue of a new world to some guys, and they might not understand the etiquette involved. It would certainly suck to lose the JS for such a small issue. No one expects or would ask for anything more than a thanks for the ride.

Re: jumpseating
Good point. I'll email our JS coordinator and get her to pass on the message via company email.
Re: jumpseating
I have been reading all these comments from the guys at the majors complaining about not getting thanked for giving up an empty seat.
Well, I admit I have used this service twice now and I am very greatful for the opportunity to use it. On both occasions I made sure that I went up and expressed my gratitude for the opportunity to have recieved that seat.
But......
For all those that are crying about not getting a pat on the back...... It is a two way street.
Not that I really care, but I my self have carried a handfull of drivers from the two majors on our recipical jump seat policy and I have not seen one make any effort to thank us for giving them a seat.
In future I will continue to take advantage of this great opportunity and I will continue to show my gratitude for it.
So.
The whole point of this is - make sure u practice what u preach.......

Re: jumpseating
I'd say I carry at least one recip pilot on every 4 day pairing I do. I'd say 1 out of 50 comes up to say hello.
I don't really care! It's a recip agreement. It goes both ways. I'm not in control of the agreement, or for that matter who gets on the plane, short of drunks. If ya wanna thank someone, thank the gate agents. Or the call center. Or the guy who owns the airline. Or the guy who made the agreement.
Having said all that, if ya wanna poke yer head up, welcome aboard.

Re: jumpseating
I too have jumpseating privileges at my company (manitoba based). I am extremely grateful for this and it has helped me out at a time in my career where I couldn't otherwise travel back home. For the most part all of the guys and girls at the majors have been great at helping me out.
I regard this as a privilege and wonderful benefit. I do my best to thank everyone involved. I try to be one of the last people off the plane so I can stop to thank the crew. Occasionally, I get blocked by the flight attendants or the Captain/FO have already departed the plane. Please let me take this opportunity to thank you guys for helping us reciprocal guys out. It most certainly is appreciated.
