Youngest To Solo In Canada.
Does Anyone know who the youngest person was to solo in canada. Because i just recently did my solo and i was the youngest in my province, but i was just wondering who was the youngest in canada because they said i was the second youngest. can anyone help me. ?
Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
I remember a kid who soloed both fixed wing and
rotary wing on his 14th birthday. If you think you
can beat that, go for it.
How about "oldest to fly solo"?

To solo you need a student pilot permit. TO obtain a student pilot permit you have to be 14 years old.Jimbo12 wrote:Does Anyone know who the youngest person was to solo in canada. So unless your take off time was exactly when the sun's disc hit 6 degrees above the horizon, on the date of your birthday then I don't know if you'd be the youngest in Canada.
All this stuff aside, why do you care anyway? If the law considers you competent to solo at 14, then it shouldn't really be a 'wow' factor. Flying is like driving - a routine maneuver once competent. If you're competent to maneuver the plane, which any 14 year old should be, then there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to solo.
Other than that, congratulations to you kiddo.

All the info above is correct
I dont agree though that you shouldnt be excited and proud of your accomplishments! Not many of us on this board can say we did our first solo at 14.. so congratulations on your step into the industry & bravo on being so focused at your young age.
Cheers.
Fly safe all.

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
Everybody should be happy about their solo's, but being first in Canada to solo or not really is just another way to say that you soloed on your 14th bday. I know quite a few that did actually; I soloed a few days after 14th.flyinthebug wrote:All the info above is correct. I'm just saying that a kid shouldn't feel "i'm the best in canada" just cause he soloed at 14. That attitude won't go far. Being laid back and cool about it however? Now that's a character people want to see in leaders.
As far as proud of accomplishments? All to you kiddo.

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
Does anyone else find it a bit funny that you can go solo in a flying machine at age 14 but you have to be 16 to drive a car
Opinions cant be proven false.
Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
No, driving a car entails more risk and evasive decision making than flying does. Don't get me wrong, you have to be efficient in flying too. But driving a car = a split of a second while flying generally gives you time to rectify a situation.2.5milefinal wrote:Does anyone else find it a bit funny that you can go solo in a flying machine at age 14 but you have to be 16 to drive a car
Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
Is Alberta no longer 14 for driver permit? Many moons ago that was my case... farmers kids help drive truck on the back 40 - not that I'm a farmer's kid LOL.2.5milefinal wrote:Does anyone else find it a bit funny that you can go solo in a flying machine at age 14 but you have to be 16 to drive a car
Anyway Congratulations Jimbo12!

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
so when the engine quits (in lets say a R44) at a 100ft, you have time to rectify the situation?
Maybe but you had better have your shite together.
...just playing the WHAT IF game.
I always have my block of salt handy when I come to Avcan

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
How many 14 year olds are bombing around in an r44 ?
At 500fpm glide, 100 feet = .25 of a minute = 15 seconds. That's much more time than a car accident
Of course, if you look at the example you provided, will a 50 year old pilot be able to recover from it? That example is not really valid to certify if a 14 year old is competent. You'd be impressed how smart kids are these days ! hehe

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
When I took my PPL flight test at 16 the examiner said he never had anyone as young as me take a PPL flight test.
Thinking back now i don't know how I managed to fly an airplane at that age, but it is probably the earlier you start the better.

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
Not a solo, but checking the log books for the old man's little piper and my first ride was 1 month and 3 days after I was born.
Doomed from the beginning I suppose.
Congrats though kid, big accomplishment and I hope theres a ton more.

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
Most air cadet flying scholarships do their glider at 16 and power at 17; many fly before they drive (not that that's anywhere near the 'youngest' mark of those who solo at 14). But I believe a lot of people do the solo at 14 thing ... especially the kids of pilots (specifically those who own their own a/c); many of whom probably started taking the controls a lot younger than that.
Pros & cons
Driving:
Pro - can stop / pull over to the side of the road.
Con - More things to hit, opportunity for higher number of passengers to hurt along with you, potential for more traffic
Flying:
Opposite of above

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
I know three people who soloed on 14th birthdays, PPLd on 16th. All had airplane owner parents. (Still an accomplishment worth celebrating, Jimbo.)
Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
for both my GPL and PPL i had to stop flying for a week after i completed my flight tests as i was not yet 16/17 and therefore could not hold the license, and was no longer on a SPP so i couldn't fly

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
To everyone who took the wind out of Jimbo12's sails with helpful comments along the lines of 'you're not that special' and 'just be cool about it': maybe you've forgotten what it's like to be 14 and/or experience the thrill of your first solo. At 30, I'm still plodding along to my first solo, so I think to do it at 14 is amazing. Congrats Jimbo! As for some of the rest of you, now I know who to call when I have to talk to my kids someday about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Now where'd I put that block of salt...
Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
Of course its an accomplishment to be proud of ... no matter what your age.
Do you know where the tradition of dumping a bucket of cold water over a student after their 1st solo came from? Its specifically to 'take the wind out of their sail' so to speak, to bring them 'back down to earth'. Walking around thinking you're the cats meow is not a healthy attitude for a flying student - and so a humbling experience is required.
But in any case, congrats on your solo flight Jimbo. Feels pretty good, doesn't it.

Way to go Jimbo, my research tells me that officially you were number 2 to do it despite whats being said on the forum. Now I have to ask; by chance have you taken control of any other aircraft in flight, maybe you have had an unfair advantage over others on the board. Since I just listened to your interview and know who you are I believe you have flown more aircraft types then most on here. I am thinking you have flown and landed a Caravan, Turbo Otter, DHC-6, Etc, Etc, Etc, thanks to the Aviators who had confidence in your ability at a very your very young age. Listen well, you will go far, keep your wits and stay on the mature side of things, this place dips below that side from time to time.
Great Show and a good Interview BTW.

Re: Youngest To Solo In Canada.
Well done to all the first soloists! Question: anyone knows what age was the youngest to become a Captain at Air Canada or Canadian on large a/c (all DC's, Boeing and Airbus... but not including Dash-8, BE1900 or RJs) (and charter airlines not included either, as one can get there faster with those)?

A Southern California teenager has serious bragging rights: After docking back in his home state late Thursday morning, Zac Sunderland, 17, can claim to be the youngest person to sail around the world alone.
