Question regarding Private Pilot Lisence

Post by bneumann »

I had my Private ticket along with Commercial but it has been about 5-6 years since I've flown. i realize that my tickets are no longer valid. But if I were to go for my Private again would have to go through the entire training or could i get away with less training hours. Thanx.

Canadian Private License does not itself expire, Medicals and currencies must be up to date, however.

"To meet the 5-year requirement, you must have either:

(i) flown as pilot-in-command or co-pilot within the previous 5 years; or

(ii) completed a flight review with an instructor and written and passed the PSTAR exam within the previous 12 months."

To put the regulations into English, basically all you need to do is renew your medical certificate (Cat 3 if you just want to fly PPL, Cat 1 if you want CPL priviledges), write the straight forward PSTAR exam, and then go cover all the exercises that would be on either the PPL or CPL flight test (depending which priviledges you want back). You don't actually do any flight test. In theory, you just need to demonstrate adequate skill that shows if you did in fact do a flight test, you could pass.

Once the instructor feels you are competant, they will sign off your logbook at which time you regain full priviledges of your license. The amount of flight time required is dependant on your skills and the discretion of the instructor. There is no minimum hour requirement from Transport Canada.

In summary:

- Renew your medical certificate - roughly $75-150 + $55 TC admin fee.

- Do the PSTAR (pre-solo test on air regulations) - should be free.

- Review the flight exercises in the air with a certified flight instructor - roughly 3 to 10+ hours of dual flight time.

If you have any other questions, just shoot me a message. I used to be CFI of an FTU.

Best of luck.
