Twenty five thousand hours

Post by kilpicki »

Was that a typo on your part J.C.? The twenty five thousand?

My good friend Dave Ried who was in the Alice Arm crash had 11,000 after 38 yrs of flying.

Entirely possible. A guy I know has over 10,000 hours in about 13 years of flying.

If someone starts flying commercially at age 18 and
flies 1,000 hrs/yr (a bit of a stretch, but hang with me)
until they retire at 60, that's 42,000 hrs.

I seem to recall a pipeline patrol pilot that flew well
past 60 and claimed to have flown an incredible 65,000
hours when he finally quit.

P.S. If it ain't logged, it didn't happen. I have
noticed over the decades that when people stop
logging time, their claimed personal totals quickly
skyrocket well in excess of 1,000 hrs/yr

At the rate i'm going right now i will have 10000 hrs in 9 years. I don't think it really matters after 5000 hrs.

Times like those just mean you're working too hard... or having too much fun still.

You'll probably feel differently about that when you hit 6000 hours

It matters if you go looking for a job, at least where I work (WestJet). When we do interviews, we go through the log books. If you claim 10,000 hours, we expect to see 10,000 hours properly logged. I'm not sure about our bros next door at Air Canada, but I expect they feel the same way.

I guess I am lucky I am not looking for a job as a pilot because I don't have any personal log books to show if I have any time at all.

However about fourteen years ago the B.C. Forest service wanted proof of the time I put on one of their forms to be approved to fly their people around and I finally suggested they call TCCA to see if they had any idea of how many hours I had.

I had put 20,000 plus hours on their form.

TC said their records showed twenty five thousand seven hundred and some hours.

Anyhow the B.C. Forest mental giant questioned the numbers and TC advised them that as far as they were concerned I had the time.

But the real truth is I really don't care who believes me.

TC said their records showed twenty five thousand seven hundred and some hours.
So when did TC start/stop tracking pilots hours?

Do you not read the form you fill out everytime you get your medical?

That is where they get the times from.

And most of us don't exaggerate the time to impress TC.

It is just a way to point out that not everyone feels time flown is the measure of what you have learned as a pilot.

I think a more important measure of what you have learned is what type of flying you do or have done and the variety of flying devices you have managed to fly without wrecking one. :smt040

I think a more important measure of what you have learned is how well you do the job you have right now... whether you're flying or not.

Last year I put in 1 hour of flying, but I did it about 700 times. Same thing the year before.

I take pride in my logbook. It is a record of a very significant portion of my life and I look back past experiences with mostly fond memories. I try to make notes on significant flights when possible and to be honest, I treasure my paper logbooks right back to the first flight. I think it's kind of sad that the "I'm too cool to keep a logbook" attitude prevails once one has accumulated xx number of flight hours. Although that goes right out the window when the economy turns down.
