Dual Controls?

Post by CelBatrin »

Came across this pic on some random trek.

Whats with the sidestick?
They don't really look that functional. More like some extension of the arm rest for trim adjustment and 'stuff' during cruise. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone fly something like this?
Its a G550 for the record.

It doesn't look like those 'side sticks' are articulated enough to control an aircraft...

The sidesticks are Cursor-Control Devices for the Planeview avionics. Not only can you enter data in the FMS, you can also use the CCD. Check out this site for all the bells and whistles that the Planeview system offers. http://www.gulfstream.com/gulfstreamplaneview/# (Click on the CCD and check out the video showing it in use.)

Thanx for the link Pratt X 3.

Keyword: 'redundant'.
Only real benefit is not having your arm suspended come turbulence. Then again how often does that happen and how long does it last? Maybe I'm wrong though.
I gotta say, the thing is sort of corny. Maybe that why they felt the need for that epic background music.

Here is the Dassault EASy version of the similar avionics (both are built by Honeywell but are customized for the individual manufacturers). The CCD's are the grey things towards the rear of the center pedestal.

The biggest benefit is that the amount of typing on the FMS is reduced and things such as route changes and radio frequency selections can be easily completed just by scrolling the cursor to the spot and clicking. Imagine trying to use your computer without a mouse and just using the keyboard.
