Doctor's Charge for TC Medical
My doctor here in Calgary has just raised his rate for a standard pilot's medical from $100 to $125, cash (or Visa) at the door. This does not include anything extra like ECG, audiogram, etc.. Of course there is then the incremental $55 Transport Canada charge to be paid on top of this.
How does the $125 per medical compare to what others are paying?

My guy in Victoria still charges $100. (extra for ECG etc..) And the $55 to Transport. HAs anyone over 40 ever thought about going to the Human Rights Council and claiming age discrimination?
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

I paid $100 for my first cat 1. All repeat medicals he only charges $80 for. In Southern Ontario.
Re: Doctor's Charge for TC Medical
$100 in Victoria and Langley. Seems reasonable to me.
I've had a $60 one in Calgary, but it was definitely a case of you get what you pay for.

I agree with you in principle, but in this case is that a good thing or a bad thing?ahramin wrote:I've had a $60 one in Calgary, but it was definitely a case of you get what you pay for.
By that I mean would you rather your doctor be very thorough and catch something that may invalidate your medical, or would you rather they be quick and do a once over before they stamp? (actual question, no sarcasm intended)
Having said that there's no reason you can't and won't continue to get check ups from a non-CAME.

My last one was $178! I won't be going back.

Re: Doctor's Charge for TC Medical
The timing of this post is kind of funny because I just had my very first Cat 1 Medical today at Springbank in Calgary with Dr. Adams. It is $90 like nimbostratus said although if you need an ECG or Audiogram it's an extra $25 a piece. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Adams to anybody, he is a pilot himself and has an awesome sense of humor. Everyone told me to see him and I'm glad they did. Oh by the way, happy to say I PASSED!!nimbostratus wrote:$90 at Springbank.

Re: Doctor's Charge for TC Medical
A certain AME in NW Ont that anyone who has ever been there knows or has heard of, has charged me anything from $80 to nothing, depending on his mood. Since I now have a clause in my contract that the company pays for my medical, I insist that he charges me no less than $100, and take the wife out for dinner .. he gets a kick out of it every time.
Re: Doctor's Charge for TC Medical
My yearly medicals have been the only visits I have made to any kind of doctor in almost 10 years. If there is something wrong with me, I want it caught as early as possible, so I want my money's worth. I will not go back to that $60 doctor, and would not have in the first place if there had not been a timing issue.taylor498 wrote:I agree with you in principle, but in this case is that a good thing or a bad thing?ahramin wrote:I've had a $60 one in Calgary, but it was definitely a case of you get what you pay for.

In addition, if there is a medical reason that I should not be flying, I do not wish to continue flying commercially until the issue is fixed. Safety third right?
Possibly this attitude comes from the fact that I am healthy and I do not need to work as a pilot. If I was 50 and overweight and paying for a house each for the bank and 2 ex-wives and not employable other than flying an airplane, perhaps my I would think differently.
And as far as flying my own airplane goes, it's not like I would stop flying it if I lost my medical anyway.
Re: Doctor's Charge for TC Medical
That raises a good point ahramin, especially for those of us now over 50 year old. In a Transport Canada Medical, your doctor is focused on medical conditions that make you fit-for-flying and looking for medical conditions that would possibly lead to incapcitation in flight. So he is not looking for conditions that tend to be higher risk as one ages, such as those nasty moles (melanoma), blood test (screen for prostrate cancer) and such. Of course some doctors may spend the extra 10-15 minutes with you.
So for us older guys, it is important that one way or another, whether a separate visit, a second session same visit or a different doctor... that you get these other things looked at. I am not a doctor of course, but after 50 your risk of prostrate cancer increases, no matter how healthy you are, so wise to get screened at least every 2-3 years, more often if you are not such a fine specimen or have a family history. And check those moles, a friend of mine just got caught a spot of melanoma just in time before it got too serious.
Side benefit is that if you get your Dr. to include an ECG in your lab test request it's free (covered by your provincial health care plan).

Re: Doctor's Charge for TC Medical
I had a doc in northern saskatchewan who charged a 26oz bottle of rye for a medical (booze being more valuable than cash in the town he lived). Some of the pilots at our other bases would just mail him the booze and their medical card and he'd mail it back with the stamp on it. Not sure I'd go see him if I was actually sick, but that's just me. I had a great one in Thunder Bay who charged $30 one year and zero the next year (he didn't want to bother making change for a fifty). Now my medical is paid for by the company, and in Oakville it's $110 to see an AME.

Re: Doctor's Charge for TC Medical
I enquired about getting a TC Cat. 1 in London near Heathrow, They were asking 300 pounds (thats like $600). That country is a joke!
