"A Crisis in Flight Training"
Albeit an American perspective, are there any thoughts on how this relates to Canadian Aviation?

How does it cost $100,000 to $200,000 to become a pilot?

No training= Less Pilots
Less Pilots= High demand
High demand = More money for existing Pilots
Bring it on!
Boom and bust boom and bust, its nothing new.

I think you are 100% right and if that is the case it's hard to have any sympathy.niss wrote:PPCs.Dust Devil wrote:How does it cost $100,000 to $200,000 to become a pilot?

Theory of flight : attitude + power + money = performance, You obviously were not paying attention during lesson plan 2istp wrote:That's that thing where you give full power and yank back on the stick, right?MDT wrote:Nobody understands Theory of Flight!

Re: "A Crisis in Flight Training"
The big differance between the US and Canada is for the first time ever, in the US, brand new pilots pretty much fresh out of the CPL MEIFR were, untill very recently, going into the right seat of regional airline turbo props and even jets as their first jobs. This resulted in an explosion of "straight to airline" flight training programs, offered by large schools dedicated to this market, often with some marketing relationship to regional airlines, and fuelled by easy credit, which churned out thousands of wannabe airline pilots every year. These pilots are wiling to take very low pay or even pay for their job (eg Gulfstream airlines) and therefore the airlines have been able to dramatically cut pilot terms and conditions. I think we are seeing a flight training bubble which is about to burst as the combination of extreemly unattractive wages and the inabilty of students to get credit will cause many of the airline pilot mills to either go under, or dramatically cut back their throughput. Whether this will eventually reduce the pilot supply and therefore improve the lot of US regional pilots, remains to be seenCadismack wrote:Albeit an American perspective, are there any thoughts on how this relates to Canadian Aviation?

In Canada the above two factors do not really apply. The straight to airline commercial programs operate on a much smaller scale. Most are college programs but they are not the same as US schools because they are educational institutions, not purely commercial enterprises and with one exception are not affiliated with airlines. And again with one small exception, airlines will not hire pilots for CAR 705 airline aircraft untill they at least have an ATPL. I think this is why we have not seen any airline jet copilots making $16,000 dollars a year....yet. That is not to say Canadain terms and conditions have not steadily deteriorated, but we have not sunk to the US lows.
