Low time single engine piston jobs (c206/207 etc..)

Hey everyone, I'm still training and on my way to my cpl and multi/ifr rating and this is my first post here. I was just wondering if anyone had some info on some single engine piston operators (not on floats) and besides skydiving ops. I often see people on these forums who cite having experience flying 206s and others of that sort up north and out west (i'm in southern ontario) yet on sites such as PCC and even on here there is rarely information about the companies with these jobs. As an alternative to instructing I think i would enjoy pursuing that route if there is some opportunity out there.

Search TC's registry of commercial operators

Here's a search of C206 operators in Prairie and Northern to get you started...

Or do a search by type and get private operators too - search "206" or whatever and weed through it... you'll probably get some lodges and such, but there will be a lot of irrelevant returns too...

McMurray Aviation if you enjoy flying overgross.....don't like strapping loads down.....you are such a good pilot you don't need to look out the right window because you have boxes packed to the roof (they must have TCAS)...and like to get your excersise by deadlifting the tail off the ground because you put a few hundred pounds too much in the very back.

sorry if this doesn't help you......maybe it will....stay away from this place. well that's my opinion. Maybe someone can point out good 206/7 operators.

Does the airplane kidnap you at gunpoint and take you flying over gross? That's horrible.


Niagara Air Tours used to be THE place to get a few hundred hours of PIC on the 206/207 for summer. Now, those planes barely turn a prop. May be worth some research though. Murray Lanz of ex-ACE fame is the new owner out there.

On a helpful note.....CanWest has a 206 in Wabasca. Our 212 shared the hanger with it for a few years. Seemed like the guy was flying quite a bit. It'd be out everyday in the summer. I know about 6 months ago he was hoping to upgrade to the KA but not sure what he's up to now. He lived in the hanger (probably the smartest thing to do in Wabasca) but had a house in Slave Lake.

Just a few off the top of my head check them out they may not all hire noobs but worth a call.

section of the charters and scan every region "Charters/Corporate/Medivac - AB", BC ,North, ON etc etc look under the fleets it will take a bit of time but just sit with a note pad when you have time and make a list of companies to pursue. The list is not complete but will give you an idea of whats out their.

Also you may have read some posts i have written on here in the past with some of mine and others advice on how they would do things different now that we are old and wise.

Thanks everyone, this is some pretty good info for me to start with! I still may go the instructing route however for a period after I graduate with the cpl and multi-ifr (early next spring) and before I sign up for an instructor rating (would be next September), I plan on contacting and applying anywhere that could have me flying asap, diving ops/air tours are a possibility as long as they are more than part-time. I know many will suggest the ramp and I have considered that route for some time however I really would prefer to just get flying, as I spent the previous four years in University getting a degree in the extremely useful field of ......history. Cheers everyone and thanks for the insight.

Get a float rating and hit up ALL the camps in NWO... ear falls, kenora, red lake, selkirk etc etc.. Theres lots of spots to start from.

As far as wheels go.. I'd say check with sandylake seaplanes or with the fine gentleman in st theresa point who has a 185 and a cherokee six (may have a beaver now... as well)

Theres a ton of stuff out there if you look hard.

I enjoyed my time @ Mac Aviation tryin to get back there but it's dead slow. (oya, r22 she flys better heavy and flair's nicer so there :lol:

Narrative: The McMurray Aviation Cessna 206, registration C-GHJB, was landing at Namur Lake, AB delivering supplies from Fort McMurray, AB. Gusty wind conditions prevailed when the aircraft touched down, bounced, and the pilot lost directional control. C-GHJB drifted off the airstrip and the right hand wingtip contacted a tree, resulting in the aircraft swinging into trees bordering the airstrip. There were no injuries, but the aircraft was substantially damaged.

I hate to tell you this dude, but being in the same position you are, a degree doesn't mean anything. Having a degree does not mean you get to jump the ramp line and get straight into a cockpit. And it's not really a preference, it's really your only option these days.

Nevertheless, I wish you all the best, and hope you may be able to get into a cockpit soon.

that sucks namur is a tough spot when your heavy and the ground is greesy down hill too I cant see them going in there when the ground is soft and wet pdm.

These guys are in your neck of the woods. Probably not hiring low timers, but in the past have hired low timers to operate the equipment and then gradually slide into the left seat.
They have a 206, a navajo, and a king air.

Hey there

I worked at McMurray Aviation for roughly three years. Things have changed greatly since I had started. The flying overloaded was more so in the past, I didn't see people going over by the time I left. It's a good place to build time and get rock solid hands and feet skill. If you haven't worked there, don't bash it. It's a great mom and pop show, you put your time in and you'll get treated well. The pay and schedule are great, that's why I put in three years. They aren't currently looking for low timers. Typically you will get a ramp gig for a year and than get flight line on a C-172. If you need more info, PM me.

I've been on the receiving end somewhere in "the patch"....these guys are down right scary......and we're talking on the last 2 years. No I haven't worked there. But I've seen their finest at work.

Try Mooseonee.

There's an operator there called "Bushland" I think.... 206, cherokee 6, and maybe a 210.

Wabusk is a solid place to start on the ramp as well. Work your way up from the ramp, to right seat ho, left seat ho/right seat king air, and eventually left seat king air. From what I've heard, they've come a long way since the days of danger as well.

Both operators are in YMO. And if you're in southern ontario, its fairly easy to get home. Expensive, but easy.

Actually,

A fully loaded 206 at or even near Aft CofG limits will almost sit the tail on the ground, and with a larger nose wheel (850 for example) it will extend the oileo to max requiring the tail to be picked up - there's nothing over-gross or illegal about it.

Yes, I have a couple thousand hours doing it.

I also see plenty of CHL Bell 206's and Astars struggling off the ground.... does that mean they are over gross? Not always, no.

Don't knock the folks at McMurray Aviation until you actually have some experience with them directly. I don't work there, but I have spent the last year getting to know them. I have found them helpful and friendly. I have met all of their pilots and instructors. They all seem genuinely satisfied with Wade and Renee. I am sure that they all wish they could be further South, but don't we all?

As far as their recent incident... As was said earlier; Namur isn't always the 'friendliest' place to fly into and the weather wasn't the greatest by the time he flew in. I made it into Ft Mac that same day within an hour of when he had his accident. As pilots we are the PIC. His accident shouldn't necessarily reflect on his employer automatically.

Well like he said it 's like a great place too get hand's and feet and as for wade and renee I always enjoyed working for them when one was not up to task because of weather or what ever you could sit around and drink coffee and shoot the breeze all day with out anyone saying a word great first real job highly recommended I would go too bat for them anytime go Aviation!
