Laptop...
I would like to take my laptop on vacation with me. After reading the requirements for security, IE: turning on the computer, the battery is shot 7 no longer will charge up.. I won't get a new battery for it, as it is older & battery is expensive. Will I be required to plug it in..? or should I just leave it at home..??

Re: Laptop...
first off, it's vacation leave the computer at home
second, i've never had to turn on my laptop. all i've ever been asked to do is take it out of my bag and have it scanned by itself.

Its vacation yes, but I say bring it along to have fun with ... just don't do any work with it, or you defeat the main purpose of being on vacation ... to get your brain in another space and rejuvenate yourself.
They might ask you to plug it in a boot it up, but so what. It will only take a few seconds to find an outlet.

You're on the computer every other day of the year. On vacation relax, go see the sights, meet people. Don't be a nerd and sit on your laptop. By checking out the sights, I mean the local women...maybe even the tourist ones if they are not to your liking.
Re: Laptop...
I have a suggestion...don't bring it as carry on, pack it in your checked baggage and there is no issue.

That is a bad idea Hot Fuel. When the bag goes missing, the airline will not pay for the cost of the laptop thanks to the Warsaw Convention.
Don't worry about getting the laptop through security. Very unlikely that they will ask you to turn it on and if they do make them get you an extension cord

I think that I've been asked to turn it on ONCE in the last 10 years, and that was pretty close to 10 years ago when laptops weren't as common.
Don't worry about it. Oh, and btw, for those of you that can't live without internet (like me), I really REALLY recommend a netbook. They very handy and have great battery life.
Don't bother if you have fat fingers though

Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from the little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear, nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings.

After going on a few cruises and using the internet cafe onboard, I thought it would be great to take a laptop with me when I finally got one. So, I got my laptop last year and took it with us on a cruise this summer. I used it on the first day to download some pictures off the camera, and then it sat untouched in the cabin until it was time to pack a week later, and I never ended up going to the internet cafe at all. My wife did end up using it on the drive home to download the rest of the pictures.
I have no issue with taking one on vacation though. In my case, my computer and the internet is pure entertainment, so I don't have the need to get away from it on vacation.

Take it with you....just be sure you do not use it in the cockpit...you might just overfly your destination ...
Re: Laptop...
My little Acer came down with the H1N1 recently. I started to use my iTouch as my standby computer. You CAN actually use it as a computer....certainly enough for a vacation. I can get emails, send emails, post here, post there, even send photos from SmugMug (which, If you don't use it, I highly recommend you do) Obviously, no CD drive....other than that though.....off you go.
