Minimun Height

Post by pilotman »

Hi everyone, I am a small pilot who has a dream to work for Air Canada. I have a good question. I am worried about my height, because I'm only 5'4'' (162 cm) and I'm 19 years old. I wanted to know if there was a minimum height to work for a major airline, especially Air canada because it is my goal.

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

I am almost positive that your height won't be an issue. I know of at least two Captains at Air Canada that are at the most 5' 4" tall. As long as you are capable of manipulating the controls your height won't be an issue.

None that I know of. The seats go up and down and the rudders adjust foreward and back to fit pretty much everybody. I've flown with a couple of girls no taller than 5 feet.

Funny you should mention that. Air Canada used to have a height restriction of I believe 5' 6" back in the 80's. They don't anymore. I guess they decided a policy that used to serve them in the past no longer did and it was time to get rid of it. Aren't the parallels amazing?

Don't see why it should be a problem at AC - it certainly wasn't for the RAF http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon_Keogh

The parallels are amazing? Maybe the equipment didn't have the seats to be used properly for smaller folks? I don't know, just guessing.
Staying past an age and giving it to your coworkers in the backside and letting a person of smaller stature are the same?
So by all rights if i was a cross eyed female midget of visible minority with a disability i should be gold!!!!!
Mention nothing of the fact my disability is being legally blind, but i have a genuine claim of being discriminated against, right??
Why set a MINIMUM sight requirement? If i can wear binoculars that can fit in the cockpit then have at it!
Should be great for Cat 2/3 with that extra edge? Or at the very least help my 90yr old captain.
Enough of this 60 shit.
The poor guy asked a question, he got answered. If every thread wants to be turned into poor old pilots being forced out of work then change the site to av60clubwholike$.ca

By the way, hope your flying works out and you get to join the Red team Pilotman. Best of luck

Haha, I have a good sense of humour fortunately. I hate to be small, but at least I've got the sens of humour and I heard it helps a litte bit. I also want to thank everyone who answered my question. I really appraciate it, I'm not worrying as much now :)

By the way, there is a good thing about that picture, now I know where to buy my uniform when I'll need one. Jk

Thewhole industry used to have a height restriction, because the controls and seat adjsutments used to be sized for 95th percentile males. In the 70's extra range of adjustment was built into seat and rudder peddal adjustments to accomodate a greater range of sizes.

Military maximum heights were actually butt to knee length limits so that your lower legs would not be amputated if you ejected.

I was advised by senior management a few years back that the problem of having a preponderance of vertically challenged check and management pilots in the company was solved by the company simply issuing a prescription for Viagra to any check pilot who requested one. It seems that those management pilots that subscribed to that service all grew an average of four inches in height.
