Running 2 Antispywares ok?

Post by TTail »

Is it ok to run 2 anti spyware programs together actively. I'm not talking about programs like Spybot and Adaware where you scan periodically, I'm talking about programs like SpySweeper and Microsofts Anti-Spyware which are always loaded and actively running/blocking in the background.

Thanks

Hmmm... I'd say you got me with this one.

My suggestion: put it to the test. There are two potential problems I can see, and some quick experimentation should help you to find out:

One program detecting parts of the other as spyware, this could occur with definition files. Might happen, might not. Simply having the two running for some time will confirm or infirm this one.

Conflicts upon detection of a suspicious file: I would not advise someone to do this in a normal situation, but I'm going to suggest you go get some spyware. Nothing too extreme, one of the more common and easy-ish to remove spywares out there. Just enough to get a reaction from both programs.

Be well aware that I have seen many people advise caution on running two anti-virus scanners simultaneously, and pretty much nothing on running two anti-spyware at once (I haven't had the opportunity to try either yet).

So you'd be boldly going where no forum poster has gone before...

Good luck and keep us updated,

Louis

P.S. I highly recommend doing some backups and having another internet-ready computer on hand prior to trying any of the above.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I'll let you know how it goes. So far running Microsoft's Antispyware and Spysweeper in conjunction with each other and so far no issues.
