I just came across this today. Imagine DC 10 cargo jets here at YXU . That would be amazing. Has anybody else heard anything other than what it says in the article? I'm interested to know what cargo carrier/s will be moving here.
I don't think they have any idea what flights will come in. Hopefully it turns into something big, but it still has that "if they build they will come, we hope" feel about it. Hamilton, Windsor and Winnipeg have been talking about doing similar things at their airports, so there will be some competition here. Good for the construction industry anyway and maybe it will speed up the transformation of Veterans Memorial (formerly Airport Road) into a highway without traffic lights.

I just don't see the traffic to make that happen. With CYHM already established and so close to CYXU, who is going to operate out of YXU?
Didn't Air Canada want/have some type expansion plans for London? Thought I heard that somewhere...could also see increased westjet, jazz flights.....and one would think the exact purpose of an expansion would be either to accommodate/attract new operators.....interesting to how this will play out over the next couple years.

What the announcement was for is cargo, not passenger traffic. They are going to build a new warehouse at the northwest corner, basically between the new CEVA and London Machinery buildings, south of Huron and west of Crumlin. The airport terminal itself isn't part of this, and I don't think it really needs to expand to support more flights as it is.
Not sure why this would be any threat to the flight schools, but I don't know what caused YHM to become anti-flight school either. Available land with direct access to the runways isn't an issue at YXU if that is a concern. YXU also isn't going to become so busy out of this that there isn't room for training flights to operate. Steve Baker was quoted as saying there are approx 10 cargo flights a day that fly over London on the way from Europe to the US and he is hoping to attract a couple of those when the new safety and security rules in the US take effect.

OK, that answers my question about who would go there.......

Good, Can't understand EDITED talk anyways. China is gonna be hurtin the most from this.
This sounds like great news. Hopefully bringing decent paying, full-time, permanent flying jobs to london and surrounding area. Instead of the poverty wage instructor gigs which there always will be. Just pass the extra cost onto the student. YQS is sounding better and better all the time.

Well the only company I can see that might move to London would perhaps and HUGE SPECULATION ALERT would be Morningstar/FEDEX and their YYZ operations, this is just absolutely hypothetical but perhaps YYZ high landing fees are causing operators to look elsewhere. London is a further drive than say Hamilton but maybe something to think about regarding delay's due to weather. I believe that when the weather is down in Hamilton only one aircraft can taxi at a time, not sure how the weather in YHM compares to YXU but something to look at and YHM has been very effective in driving business away.
Well, as long as they can handle construction funds and projects better than Tradeport, this should be a positive for London and the surrounding area. Maybe it will look good on Tradeport to have some cargo operators move to/choose London to avoid the BS in CYHM.

I can't see any of the overnight express companies moving an operation to London from either Toronto or Hamilton.
I don't know what the landing fees for an MD-11 are at YYZ, but the savings would be offset by several linehauls having to run down the 401. Considering the bulk of their freight comes from the GTA, and the time sensitive nature of the business, I can't see this happening.
