I found this surfing. I don't know if it's been posted on this forum before, but I thought it was good.
DON'T COMPARE MY JOB TO OTHER JOBS
Much has been said and written in the press concerning pilots' salaries and compensation. We have been told about how much it will cost our company, our job has been compared to others, and various subtle and not so subtle threats and intimidation tactics have been hurled at our group. In light of the current situation, please allow me, a pilot to give you a small glimpse into my world...
DON'T COMPARE MY JOB TO OTHER JOBS
...How many boardrooms explode over Long Island Sound?
...How many meetings conclude with hundreds of dead bodies?
...How many trucks cost $82 million dollars?
...How many doctors spend half the month away from their families?
...Do the children of media representatives cry when Daddy puts on his uniform to go to work because they know he'll be gone for a week?
...How many salesmen lose their jobs because they have high blood pressure?
...How many lawyers spent Christmas alone in a crash pad?
...When your wife is watching TV an the program is interrupted by a news flash of an aircraft accident, does she momentarily freeze in fear for what she might hear?
There is not another profession in the world where the consequences for mistakes are so catastrophic and unforgiving.
THE PRICE
...I pay the price when somebody loads full oxygen containers in the cargo hold
...I pay the price when a terrorist has a bone to pick
...I pay the price when loaders forget to set the locks
...I pay the price when engineers design a fuel pump not quite correctly
...I pay the price when Mother Nature decides to shift the winds...
YOU SPEAK OF THE COST
...Ask the CEO of Valu-Jet the cost of a DC-9 buried in the Everglades...The Cost..
...Ask Fred Smith the cost to scrape a DC-10 and MD-11 from the runways at Steward and Newark...The Cost
...Ask Korean Airlines the cost of a 747 that didn't quite make the runway at Guam... The Cost
...Ask Fine Air the cost to clean up a DC-8 off a Miami Street...The Cost
...Ask Bob Crandall the cost of a B-757 impacting a Colombian mountain...The Cost
...And if not for their Cool, Calm, Professionalism, what could have been the cost of a UPS B-727 that suddenly went dark and silent four miles above Chicago? How much were they worth to you that night? Industry standard or 25 % below? ...... The Cost
WHEN YOU TRY TO INTIMIDATE ME, REMEMBER
...It was I who flew Cobra gunships in the jungles of Vietnam while you worked on your Masters degree
...It was I who sat alone at the tip of an F-18 in the silent instant before I was catapulted over a cold, dark sea, while you slept peacefully in your bed
...It was I who, one night watched my wings grow heavy with ice, miles from the safety of the nearest airport praying that I had enough fuel to find clear skies, while you watched Monday night football
...It was I who flew a C-130 into Panamanian gunfire, while you decorated your Christmas tree in 1989
...It was I who faced head-on the fourth largest army in the world over the deserts of Iraq and brought it to its knees, while you watched it on CNN
...It was I who landed an A-6 on a floating piece of tarmac no bigger than your backyard, while you mowed yours
...It was I who orbited in unarmed tankers over enemy territory to replenish others sworn to protect you
...It was I who watched missiles and bullets blossom in my face, yet didn't turn and run, while you watched the flowers in your garden blossom
...It was I who buried a friend
...It is I who knows a little boy who will never play catch with his Dad, so that you may play with your grandchild
Sir, please don't try to intimidate me.
I am not your enemy, I am your asset, an asset who has experienced and accomplished things few others dare to try. Realize this and there few obstacles we can't overcome.

it was beautiful until you get to the "when you try to intimidate me " part.
Vietnam was full of mistakes according to Robert Macnamara.
Panama was a "surgical" operation designed to remove a former puppet of Bush Sr. Hundreds of innocent Panamanians died but the media did not report it.
Iraq's "Desert Storm" was an invasion over control of oil. Or was it to Remove Saddam or perhaps to destroy WMD.
The cowboy that wrote this almost had me going with his inspirational words, but then he reveals himself as a soldier of the Empire exerting punishment on third world civilians.
I await your comments.

Ok here I go again, about to be flamed....
The US may be far from perfect, but without them we would have.... possible World NUCLEAR war, all because some crazy person in other parts of the world decides it's time to show their power.
The cowboy?? Well, I for one would be more than willing to fight for my country (CANADA). If it meant policing the world, so be it. My heartfelt thanks go out to the persons fighting for our freedom, and the way of life I cherish....
IMHO. the US, although very in your face, is the world police. Without the threat of retaliatition from them (US), I do believe we would be in a very dangerous and deadly world. The cowboy that wrote this almost had me going with his inspirational words, but then he reveals himself as a soldier of the Empire exerting punishment on third world civilians.

Watch "the Fog of War", read your Noam Chomsky, ask someone from Panama about the shanty towns that were bombed were hundreds died, read about Powell's change after witnessing the massacre on the "highway of death", let me know if any WMD have been found in Iraq. The closest we came to nuclear war was when Cuba tried to set up Soviet missiles in their country , why didn't the US invade then? after all it is less than 90 miles (statute) away. One country with a lot of nuclear armament is Israel why not invade them?

Ok, well, I am NOT professing to be a expert on world affairs. I have been to Panama (Have you??) and people I have spoken to there (Natives) do not feel any resentment to the US. Of course, there are exceptions.
I am NOT saying everything the US has done is right!!! I am just saying that we (CANADA) are under the umbrellla of the US, and we enjoy a life style not common to the rest of the world.. Don;t get me wrong, I AM A TRUE PATRIOT... Canada RULES, but our military sadly lacks... could we protect ourselves... hmmm, maybe barely...

I'm going to go with testpilot on this one... The US is no longer the world's policeman- that role died with the Cold War, but, no less, the neo-cons (I think the term is- the guys in orfice now) to the south want oh so badly to recapture that role. Back in the day, the 'free' world had a common enemy to fear- the commies. Which was a perfectly reasonable fear... At that time, the US was in position to offer protection to countries that asked, and very much enjoyed the feeling of being the eagle that protected the civilized world under it's wing.
Well with the collapse of the USSR, the threat of Communism spreading was seen as drastically reduced. The world generally became a safer place... fast forward to the 1990's and enter Rummy, Chen, etc stage right. I imagine that the pax americana state that prevailed during the Cold War was enormously profitable for a few individuals... and now in this time of 'peace', that previously enjoyed income was gone. What to do? Bring back the Pax Americana state... hmm, that means we need a big bad enemy that the world will realize is out to get them, and will once again seek refuge under our wing (muhaha) Aha! Look, a terrorist! And so it goes... or went as the case is now- the neo-cons attempted to mould this 'terrorism' into the shape Communism previously held... but it seems that someone forgot to remind them that Europe (a majority of the countries previously asking for protection) has been dealing rather efficiently with terrorism for decades now, and thus realizes it's real threat and potential (or lack thereof).
But heck, in the spirit of the old west maybe... lets convince all these nice gullible folks at home here that sure, an attack and subsequent invasion is imminent, run for your lives... or better yet, let us protect you- in fact we're willing to go over there and strike back first.

WHEN YOU TRY TO MAKE ME BUY A PPC, REMEMBER
...It was I who flew pop and chips
...It was I who sat alone in -40 degree weather, on the cold, dark tundra thinking, "will I die? or will the weather clear?"
...It was I who, one night watched my wings grow heavy with ice, miles from the safety of the nearest airport praying that I had enough fuel to find clear skies, while you watched Monday night football
...It was I who ate KD alone, while you decorated your Christmas tree in 1989
...It was I who faced my fourth business go under with student loans to repay
...It was I who landed my Super Cub on a tree surrounded lake no bigger than your backyard, while you mowed yours
...It was I who orbited around glassy water throwing rocks, so I could land safely to replenish drunk American fishermen with more beer
...It was I who had students try to kill me by pulling the mixture on base, while you mixed up cocktails
...It was I who who buried friends
...It is I who knows a little boy, who'll never play catch with his real dad, because you're banging my ex-wife
Sir, please don't try to make me buy a PPC!
(I thought the original post needed some Canadian content.)

Testpilot -----I got a few questions for you because as a Canadian you just gotta know the answers....your parents can help with this one too. Who has been covering your ass and theirs since 1945 at THEIR expense? Where did all the vast sums of money come from for you and them to have the much vaunted Canadian Healthcare Plan? Could it be from the monies that the government took away from the Canadian military and could that be why they are little more than a Militia now? Minutes after the WTC, when a Korean airliner was approaching over the Yukon Territory and wouldn't answer repeated calls to land, whose Air Force was sent out to intercept and make it land? Why were the CAF not able to even have an operational F-18 take-off to do that intercept over their own territory and had to rely on those s.o.b's south of the border?
You better pause a moment and think because just living next door to those s.o.b's, you've been able to watch the rest of the world go by in safety and you got it all for free......and so did your parents. They don't walk on water and fuk-up lots, but have you got another country in mind for a replacement neighbour.........one willing to cover your ass for the next 50 years and charge you nothing........name one. When you think of one, send that info to Paul Martin because he's arguing all the time with those s.o.b's and could use a nicer neighbour..........one that wouldn't ask him to spend money on his Militia and expecting him to stop asking for rides to other places in the world for his troops because he got no planes to do so. Rotten s.o.b's....they should all fuk-off and die.

Now that my friends....is great piece of literature.istp wrote:WHEN YOU TRY TO MAKE ME BUY A PPC, REMEMBER

Hmmm, let's see a little about Noam Chomsky...........Bede wrote:Testpilot - perhaps you don't like the US. Lots of Canadians don't, but having read Noam Chomsky - a washed up 60's "the reveloution is coming" type guy - is hardly the place to get factual information.
Lets keep the politics out of this thread.
He is the professor of: Linguistics, Linguistic Theory, Syntax, Semantics, Philosophy of Language at MIT.
A handful of his other creditations include: degrees from University of London, University of Chicago, Loyola University of Chicago, Swarthmore College, Delhi University, Bard College, University of Massachusetts, University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, Amherst College, Cambridge University, University of Buenos Aires, McGill University, Universitat Rovira I Virgili, Tarragona, Columbia University, University of Connecticut, Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, University of Western Ontario, University of Toronto, Harvard University, University of Calcutta, and Universidad Nacional De Colombia. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Science. In addition, he is a member of other professional and learned societies in the United States and abroad, and is a recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the American Psychological Association, the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences, the Helmholtz Medal, the Dorothy Eldridge Peacemaker Award, the Ben Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science, and others.
Oh, and he's also widely known as possibly the greatest critical thinker of our time.
But hey, all those "washed up 60's 'the reveloution is coming' type" guys can say that. He's definitely not "the place to get factual information."
Gimme a break.

Sorry guys, but this person says he's a CANADIAN period. I don't then tell everybody who I am NOT LIKE. Whatever it is that the majority of Canadians do, THEY MUST compare that endeavour to the Americans and then decide if they are better or not as good as the Americans at it. Hear me loud and clear ......I DON"T CARE IF CANADIAN ANTHING IS BETTER OR WORSE THAN THE U.S....it's CANADIAN period! If Americans don't like what we do or say, then they can "stick it where the sun don't shine" because maybe Thailand, Australia or Turkey doesn't either. Stop the beef, hogs, sheep, lumber, underwear, movies, TV programs, auto parts, tooth picks or whatever from crossing the border and we'll still survive because they ain't the only country in the world that buys or sells things. If someone thinks we can't, then we shouldn't exist anyway.
............thank you ISTP for changing those words to something CANADIAN....and I hope and trust you didn't do it with the idea that it had to be better or worse than the American version.......just make make the damn thing CANADIAN and if somone doesn't like it, then don't read it period. Good on ya!

Holy balls! Fidel has Cuba in poverty?! No way!
I'm not sure what my pointing out a man's credentials has to do with me needing to grow up, but whatever, you're not the first person that's told me to do so.
I wasn't around in the sixties, so I'm not too familiar with Chomsky's work from that time period. I have, however read some of his recent works concerning more recent issues. As far as I'm concerned, they're bang on; maybe you should get over yourself and give them a read before you discount them. I can understand that you may not agree with his point of view, but the man (who was called "the most important intellectual alive") is by no means the hack you're trying to make him out to be.

Shimmey Damper,
I actually logged on to edit my post. Perhaps I was a bit strong in my previous post. I actually have read a bit of his work (I even bought one of his books), and I can't say I completely disagree with him; he does have some good points. I probably like Chomsky much better than you like George W. or Reagan. Anyways, the parts I most strongly disagree with are his double standards in regards to US foreign policy, and his complete lack of knowledge on economic issues. He lambasts the US for atrocities (not completely unwarranted), but fails to critizise other countries. (I do realize and appreciate his explaination for this - that he can't make a difference in other countries, but he can make a difference at home). His economic deficiencies are obvious to most of those with a bit of economic schooling.
I agree, Chomsky is one of the most respected intellectuals in the last fifty years, but I don't put too much weight on the thoughts of intellectuals because I like doer more than thinkers. Anyone can come up with a theory, but until it is proven it is just a theory (Read Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent - a theory that can be refuted without much effort)
In regards to his sixties leanings I just finished Horowitz's (a former 60's radical) autobiography and he says some very interesting things about his former friend (Chomsky). It is a good read.
Anyways, no hard feelings. I didn't intend for this thread to be condoning American foreign policy, but just for some pilots to reflect that we are professionals and should be treated as such.
P.S. Was it the NY Times that called him the most important intellectual? I think I remember reading that somewhere. Anyways, kind of ironic given that Chomsky thinks the NY Times is right wing.
