Post by robbreid »

Aircraft on departure from an island airport lost power, pilot elected to deploy the Ballistic Parachute, upon hitting the water,
the Cirrus flipped upside down and began to sink. Pilot used a emergency hammer to smash out a window, and remove his life raft
from the aircraft. He was rescued with minor injuries.

Boats attempted to tow the aircraft, but it sank.

My understanding is once under the canopy, your forward momentum is about 10-15 knots, I can't remember the expected g-force on impact. Does anyone know if you can use the rudder to turn into wind at such a low speed or are you at the mercy of the wind direction?

Been a while since i've flown it but, there was a minimum altitude for deployment. Something like 1000 feet. During initial deployment it tends to go nose low. This may be why it flipped over.

In terms of G force on impact I believe it was something in the range of 1000'\min. The seats are designed for this type of impact to disapate some of the energy.

Descent rate is expected to be less than 1500'/min with the chute deployed with a lateral speed equal to the surface wind according to the POH. Forces involved are equivilent to a drop from 10'.

No min altitude but they recommend 2000'. 920' to deploy in a one turn spin. 400' to deploy when level.

Don't know why they tried towing it. The plane is a writeoff after deployment anyway.

Not all boaters know much about aircraft post chute deployment...

the chute was pulled at 650 ft so the pendulum effect probably did not have time to subside before the aircraft hit the water and so it rolled on it's back. Just my thoughts on the reason the aircraft flipped over !!!
