Delta/Northwest A330 terrorist attack
Apparently the Delta/Northwest Airlines plane was over Canada when the terrorist tried to detonate his device. If he had succeeded then Canada might well have suffered a Lockerbie style disaster. Imagine an Airbus A330 crashing into downtown Toronto, London or Windsor, Ontario.
Canada should ban overflights of aircraft travelling to and from the USA.

Or maybe the US should ban all muslims on flights in and out of the USA? I'm being sarcastic, and I hope you were too.Canada should ban overflights of aircraft travelling to and from the USA.

Im sure CATSA will be right on top of things, lots of pat downs and toothpaste confiscations. Little old whilte ladies in wheelchairs will no doubt be given extra scrutiny. Business as usual!
But seriously, I heard that the security lineups are crazy in YYZ and passengers can only bring 1 carry on bag and have to stow all their items for the last hour of flight. I don't know how much more crap the average traveller can take before we see a serious decline in travel again. Not good for our industry.
As far as banning muslims......that will of course never happen, but over the last few days I've heard an awful lot of people say that. Its too bad but I think this is kinda the last straw for some people. 9/11, The Shoe Bomber, The liquids guys in the UK, the London Subway attack (not aviation related but......)

Re: Delta/Northwest A330 terrorist attack
Although I disagree with the comment about stopping overflights... when 911 occurred, why didn't the Americans implement routine interception procedures and send fighters to escort the overflights heading to American destinations instead of shutting down their airspace? Canada was faced with dealing with the possibility of airborne terrorists from aircraft that weren't even destined for our airports. Isn't the American airforce large enough to handle
especially when you consider the aircraft were spread out along the air routes all across the Atlantic and Pacific?...239 diverted aircraft to Canadian airports across the country - most of which had been en route from Europe and heading for the United States. Having a standard that pilots lose their licence after making a mistake despite doing no harm to aircraft or passengers means soon you needn't worry about a pilot surplus or pilots offering to fly for free. Where do you get your experience from?
Re: Delta/Northwest A330 terrorist attack
Banning all Muslims would be a bit too extreme, but Canada should create its own list of terror suspects who would be prohibited from flying over Canadian terrirtory. Americans were warned about this guy and done nothing.Or maybe the US should ban all muslims on flights in and out of the USA? I'm being sarcastic, and I hope you were too.
Re: Delta/Northwest A330 terrorist attack
At the time of the attack - NORAD had at the most 15-20 fighters ready to go across all of North America. These are jets, armed and fueled sitting primed in a QRA hangar.GilletteNorth wrote: Isn't the American airforce large enough to handle <snip>

Or maybe homeland security should do it's job properly. Now there's something to talk about !Odysseus wrote:Or maybe the US should ban all muslims on flights in and out of the USA? I'm being sarcastic, and I hope you were too.Canada should ban overflights of aircraft travelling to and from the USA.

I'm in no way defending the DHS or TSA, however most of the problem children of recent years haven't gone through TSA screening.

Re: Delta/Northwest A330 terrorist attack
Theres probably 300,000 other young muslims who would love to pull off an attack like this but unfortunately, they can't all be caught ahead of time. The thing with this guy is that his dad actually contacted the authorities about him but somehow he still made it on...... And now the average joe has to deal with all this nonsense....

Re: Delta/Northwest A330 terrorist attack
Right... but what I'm saying is all the aircraft didn't arrive together, they were strung out across the Atlantic and Pacific and most took many took hours to get to landfall, fly approaches and land... surely their airforce could have ramped up and got more planes in the air. Not just the QRA flights? Or can I expect that if the Soviets ever change their mind about glasnost and decide to sent their bombers over that the only flights I'll see intercepting will be a pitiful 20 or so NORAD QRA fighters?SAR_YQQ: At the time of the attack - NORAD had at the most 15-20 fighters ready to go across all of North America.
