AME Licence Renewal

Post by scooter2 »

Can somebody out there bring me up to speed on the procedures for renewing a persons Canadian AME Licence? I have been out of the Aviation loop for about 2 and a half years now and my licence expires this July. Is this going to be a problem for me since in the 5 year span of my current issue licence...... I might be short the required time working on aircraft??? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Your license is not valid. You must of worked at least 6 months in the past 2 years. See CAR's 403.05 & 566.05.
Better start studying CAR's. OUCH !!!

Hi there,

I just went through this recently.

What dash 123 says is correct, according to CARS. But, when I went in to renew mine I was'nt asked for proof of employment.
I paid my money, they gave me a temp, took my picture, and the new one showed up about a month later.
I have not been an employee of any company for more than 5 years, and have been ACA only a few times, even though I was fixing airplanes most of the time as a contractor with an agency.

If it was me, I'd go in and pay the money, fill the form, and see where it goes. Im betting you will get it.

Your license is still valid...it's just not current. The 6 months in the past 2 years is in regards to the currency of your license not its validity. So, you still hold a valid AME license, but you cannot exercise the privileges of it until you become current again.

I think your options are to write the cars exam or work for six months under the supervision of a ame to regain your currency. The above statement is correct. To write the cars exam is no big deal as long as you speak english.

I just renewed earlier this month, even though my license wasn't going to expire until March 2010. I filled out form 24-0083 and submitted it with $40 at the local TC office. They took a new picture and sent me on my way. Less than 2 weeks later, both my paper temporary and new plastic license arrived on the same day (which kind of defeated the purpose of the temp one... ). That's all there is to it.

Oh, and there's a new policy that your AME license can be "expired" for a year before they make you write the CARS exam again, which takes some pressure off. 8)

Finally, good to see some knowledgable posts about this subject.

Guys who don't know what they are talking, should quit pretending they do, then there would be a lot less mis-information in this forum. JUST THE FACTS, MA'AM! I know that rumours about inconsistent TC info about this often confuses things even more, but it ain't that complicated, folks.

Too many AME's don't understand what the difference is between just having a 'valid' licence and having 'recency' that allows you to excercise the privileges of your licence. If you don't understand that, how the heck can you ever sign anything out and know that you are legal?

You can have a Valid licence, and deliver papers for a living. If you want to excercise the priviliges of your licence, though, you had better be recent as well. If you renew your licence before your expiry, it's simply a renewal fee (I think $40?). If you're expired for less than a year, it's an Application fee, ($115?). If you're expired for MORE than a year, it's an application fee ($115) and CAR's exam ($100).

In NO case can you exercise the privileges of your licence unless you are recent, i.e. having performed maintenance on the applicable type for 6 of the past 24 months.

Go to Transport Canada's Website , CAR's 566.04 and .05

Yes, the difference is what you get paid at the end of the day. Whether you get the job/contract may hinge on it.

If you can't sign anything, who cares what the semantics of the term are? It's a specious argument. The reality is you can't sign.

Oh, and if you trust TC enough to walk in to their office with a one year expired license and not expect to be given the gears then good luck with that!

From my experience, I don't trust the bastards enough to walk in 24 hours expired - new policy irregardless. I've had too much experience arguing against their inconsistency, double talk, and lies.
