Forum Moderation

Post by duplicate2 »

Based on what's been happening in the Flight Instruction forum, I've become concerned with how the moderation takes place on avcanada. Obviously if 2 moderators can't agree on the appropriate response to a heated discussion, there's a disconnect somewhere.

My specific issue is that a moderators' actions could be clouded by their personal feelings or even their obligations to their employers leading to unethical censorship. Are there stated guidelines they must follow?

A suggestion would be to at least have an auto generated "edited by [moderator] on [date / time]" when posts are changed or deleted, similar to when we edit our own posts. This would at least provide some warning that the content MAY not represent the poster's original intent. I believe some of the actions taken tonight in the Flight Instruction forum do change the sense of what was intended.

I think avcanada is a fantastic resource for Canadian aviation. It also provides the opportunity for the (relatively) free sharing of ideas and opinions. Communities, online or otherwise, must have rules. But the exchange of ideas, as well as the right to disagree, should not be limited in my opinion, as long as they don't infringe on the legal or personal rights of others.

Thank you avcanada for providing this excellent service to us all.

This has been discussed in the mods forum and we have come to an agreement that should keep things running smoothly.
Thanks for your input, we do take this seriously and we live and learn :)

duplicate2: I do not posses the wit of my compatriots so i will just answer you question.

Moderators here do not moderate. The moderator permissions simply match the level of control we require. Mods will do one of three things:

1. Move a topic to a more appropriate forum. Usually accompanied by a pm to the member so that they can find their post.

2. Move a topic to the mod forum so that we can discuss whether or not to remove it.

3. Remove a topic.

2 and 3 are done in the following situations only, which are delineated in the forum rules: Personal attacks (this forum is meant to be anonymous if the member wishes) and company bashing threads that could open avcanada to lawsuits. Free speech is all fine and good, but av is not about to take a pain in the ass for your freedom of speech. See my post here:
http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopi ... ight=#9843

In addition spam is removed (ie how to make a million dollars in nigeria)

Oh and because the vast majority of the world has serious problems with themselves, no porn.

So where do editing post, removing selected posts, locking topics and deleting topics that question those actions fit into this?

I understand and completely agree with the summary of the avcanada rules as you stated them. The actions taken by the moderator in the WWFC Royal Rumble thread seem to exceed those rules.

Read my reply to that, I tried to explain a little more :D

Once again, we talked about those posts specifically in the mod section and I think we all know where we stand, so theres less chance of 'troubles' in the future ;)

The editing of the moderators, from what I have seen, has been quite correct.

Recently, I suffered a vicious attack whereby the poster racially slurred my wife as well as the mother of my 5 year old son.

I was dumbfounded.

The moderator (Endless, I believe) with no input nor complaint from me removed the post in question, retained my thread with the other posts intact, and sent me an e-mail apologising to boot!

WELL DONE!!!

I couldn't have asked for a more correct attitude.

(I do wonder what happened to the twit who attacked me though. I haven't seen him here on AVCANADA since the incident.)

You have a wife and you date another woman that gave you a child 5 years ago? Christmas must get expensive.

Well yes, the e-mail i got said that they had 2 million USD they were trying to get out and would give me %20 if i would send them $10 000 to get it out. Here was my response:
Thank you for your wonderful offer. This money would really help me as i am trying to buy a summer house and my wife, while highly ornamental and functional is very expensive.

Unfortunately the only money that i can get on short notice is tied up in escrow right now and i cannot get it out because of an unpaid $1000 lawyer bill.

If you would send me $1000 in Canadian currency or the equivalent in US currency then i will be able to get my money out of escrow and then send you the 10k.

Thank you again and i look forward to doing business with you.

Signed, Irving Washington

duplicate2: No one is sticking up for the editing or moderation of that thread. Apparently you guys hit a sore spot of one of the moderators. They overracted and edited/deleted/locked the topic without just casue. The issue has been talked over by all the mods. We've all agreed that in the future if any thread comes up involving companies we work for or are closesly tied to then we just won't moderate them. I wish I could bring back what was written but I can't. Hopefully you can allow us to eat crow and we can all continue on.

TJ: that was indeed me that sent you the PM. Spouting off about someones wife is way over the line.

Okay, I'll leave it alone now. I appreciate the responses.

What I can't believe is that watching Chris Farley do the chippendales dance is not considered indecent. It does make me want jello though.
