This great to see. I applaud it and believe it's a prudent move. But I can't help wonder why this wasn't done nine years ago? Again...A great move but one almost too long overdue that would have minimized the anger towards muslins in the past decade. Found on the CBC site.

The 20 imams associated with the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada said this marked the first fatwa by the Muslim clergy declaring attacks on Canada and the U.S. as attacks on Muslims.

"In our view, these attacks are evil, and Islam requires Muslims to stand up against this evil," the imams said in their fatwa.

The imams also said it is a duty of every Muslim in Canada and the U.S. to safeguard the two countries.

"They must expose any person, Muslim or non-Muslim, who would cause harm to fellow Canadians or Americans," they said.

The 20 imams who signed the fatwa come from B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Houston.

The fatwa comes just weeks after an attempted bombing on Christmas Day of a U.S. airliner bound for Detroit from Amsterdam.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian Muslim man, has been indicted on six charges, which include attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted murder.

I applaud there efforts, however I think they are all wearing a bullseye now.

This is a pretty smart move on their part. They need to continue in this vein and aggressively combat the violent crazies which have been allowed to represent them in public. And to lead by example for the future generations of muslims, in every country, who could be swayed either way.

It's also a much better image repairing strategy than accusing everyone in the west of racism and stereotyping.

The West cannot change Islam, it can only fight back. And that means war; constantly and all over the world. Islam has a chance to deal internally with its conflict and define itself in a positive manner going forward. This would be a much better solution IMO.

I agree this is a good move on the part of those few Imams. It is long overdue and desperately needs to be expanded to the Muslim religion worldwide.

Have they not noticed before now though that the extremists have never shown any reluctance to attack other Muslims? They are only too willing to blow up Mosques and public markets killing hundreds of Muslim men women and children in the process, and they do so with disgusting regularity. Have been for many years.

Right on!They kill much more of their brothers, than non-muslims.

I see this as a long overdue good move by the Imam's.

However you also have to realize the Muslim faith is secular: Shiite and Sunni.

Also keep in mind, Sunni's rarely kill/(target) Sunni's and Shiite-Shiite, it's one v the other.

I read this as 'Syed Wassisname and the other fellows know something is coming, and this is their preemptive "We had nothing to do with it, in fact, we tried to stop it, and it isn't our fault".
These are just straws in the wind, and they are just the first, but they show me at least that some Muslims are aware of what will happen if the elephant awakens. One more plane down and you watch what happens then.
