Hello, I am currently a 3rd year student in the Commercial Aviation Management program at the University of Western Ontario.

I'm hoping to find a full time summer job working ramp or dock, with the possibility of it leading to a job after graduation. I have some previous experience working the ramp at Maylan Flight Academy in London, ON. I've also worked with Air Cadets at the Central Region Gliding School. I am doing my flight training through the university, and should be done my commercial ride before the summer, or close to it.

I am wondering what opportunities are out there. Any tips, suggestions, ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steven

If you don't mind moving for the summer....try Sandy Lake Seaplane. I know afew people who went there and now are captains at Kenn Borek and Voyager in Africa on the RJ. It would be a good place to start off.....

you could always try wasaya as well...I hear they need some staff for their timmins base..... too soon????

Arctic Sunwest in Yellowknife usually hires students for the summer. I believe the pay is fair, and I think they will provide housing. A summer in YK will give you exposure to four companies that routinely hire guys out of school, so wether you want to stay at Sunwest or move on, I think it is a productive option.

How do you like the Western aviation program? I know I've seen you're name on the TM3 boards (I don't own an M3)

Haha I just remember this thread. Ya that's me on TM3.

I like the Western program in that you get the whole university experience. It may not be for everyone, but it's an experience to say the least. Just started 4th year and I'm starting to feel the pressure from deciding to work this summer instead of staying behind to catch up on flight training. I think my year and the year before me got the worse experience from the program due to switching flight schools 3 times (Empire --> Maylay --> Diamond Flight Centre). All in all though, I would probably still pick this program if I had to choose again, and I like the fact that in case something happens and I lose my medical, I will have a backup with the university degree.

:smt017 So, is it a 3 year or a 4 year program? Are you going to work the ramp/dock while getting your cpl or after getting it?

The program is a 4 year university program. We are suppose to be done our CPL Flight test by the end of the 3rd year, but because it is an integrated program, we won't get our licenses signed off until 4th year. I was originally hoping to work the ramp/dock last summer to gain some experience, but ended up working with the Air Cadet Power Scholarship program. I will be done school after this year though, and will need a real job.

Take any mention of maylan off your resume. It's nothing but a negative black mark for any hiring manager who knows what went on there, which is the majority of them. I've been passed over for a job because I worked there...they actually specifically said it.
