PICTURE: Canada's first C-130J emerges from paintshop
By Craig Hoyle
Canada's first of 17 next-generation C-130J tactical transports has emerged from the paintshop at Lockheed Martin's Marietta manufacturing site in Georgia.
Ottawa signed a $1.4 billion deal in January 2008 for its new fleet of C-130Js, all of which will be produced in the stretched-fuselage -30 configuration.
The type will be used to replace part of the Canadian armed forces' inventory of 22 legacy C-130E/Hs. Five KC-130H tankers are also in operational use, according to Flightglobal's MiliCAS database.
"Canada's new fleet of C-130Js will fly farther, faster, with more payload and much higher reliability [than its current Hercules]", says Lockheed. Deliveries of the new aircraft will start later this year, and be completed during 2012, it adds.
The introduction of the new C-130J fleet follows Canada's earlier acquisition of four C-17 strategic transports from Boeing for around $870 million. Delivered in 2007 and 2008, the larger type is being used to support disaster relief efforts launched following the major earthquake that hit the Caribbean island of Haiti.

Here's a trivia question for someone still in the military. Why did they switch from 300 series numbers on the rest of the Hercs, to 600? After all, a Herc is a Herc is a Herc.
Re: Canada's First C130J - Picture
They chose the 600 series to differentiate between the J model Hercs and the E/H models. This way they can start the numbering over again and be more representative of the new fleet.

That is a sweet looking airplane. A lot nicer looking than the old Hercs.

Careful ., be prepared for the incoming - 'the money wasted on the aircraft and paint would have been better spent on welfare kids' and other such socialist statements.

yup and then hold protests in Ottawa / local MP's office because "we" didn't do enough to help the poor people of country XYZ and should have sent more troops to Peace keep and deliver food and aid.........................Bushav8er wrote:Careful ., be prepared for the incoming - 'the money wasted on the aircraft and paint would have been better spent on welfare kids' and other such socialist statements.

I got to fly a C130J several years ago. Different engines, different props, much better performance, modern avionics, and a 2-crew cockpit. It's a much different aircraft than the E & H models we operated until now. Seems logical to me they'd go for a new number series.shitdisturber wrote:Here's a trivia question for someone still in the military. That's right, we should be in Darfur with the Hercs delivering food, not with the Hercs in Afghanistan ... delivering food.
After all, Darfur is a darling cause of the Hollywood Left ... or should I say The Hollywood Progressives, while going after Al Qaeda and Taliban is somehow unseemly.

To bad the Jercules can't land on Gravel, those composite props are a bit to delicate. To bad they took a great aircraft and turned it into a sissy machine.
Re: Canada's First C130J - Picture
Umm if memory serves me correctly the Beech 1900 as well as the Saab 340 both have composite props....not to mention "low wing" so I don't see how Gravel Ops will be an issue for a HercCYOX wrote:To bad the Jercules can't land on Gravel, those composite props are a bit to delicate. Nice to see. Too bad it's 10 years behind everyone else.

Better late than never ! The good news is we are getting high serial number aircraft which have several very significant modifications that resulted from problems with earlier C130J's. I am a big believer in the adage "never buy the "A" model of any aircraftAV8OR wrote:Nice to see. Too bad it's 10 years behind everyone else.

Re: Canada's First C130J - Picture
My understanding is the C130J is basically a new design. The only common part with the C130 E/H is the cover to the pee tube in the backiflyforpie wrote:But it is the 'J' model.Big Pistons Forever wrote:Better late than never !
