Re: Haven't been around for a while
Nice pics!
I do have a question about the second picture... What is that round thing mounted on the bottom of the engine cowling? I have been wondering for quite some time!
Thanks.

Those are GREAT Sheep, nice to have you back....! Looks like I'll be working in Yukon again this summer, seems like mineral exploration is hitting the big time again, will you be around?

Air Intake. He's got an after-market, longer than stock, air filter on there too.wxguy wrote:Nice pics!

Hey sheephunter... is that you in the photos? You ever fly around the Root River area of NWT?

PF, yep! STL, would like to have been in the YK or NWT but my daughter is getting married in mid July so it's likely I won't be working this season. Glad to hear the exploration is firing up again maybe some work for us guys.

Re: Haven't been around for a while
Forgot to thank '48 for answering the other question. That cub has the 180hp in it. It's nice to have that extra power when you need it. The Root River was quite a few years ago. Here's a photo of what I left there in after "the bear".

Re: Haven't been around for a while
Great pics! Where's the 3rd one taken (the Cessna on floats)? Reminds me of a spot on Nejanilini Lake.

Re: Haven't been around for a while
Slats, that's in Nunavik... west of Kuujjuaq
Re: Haven't been around for a while
I like that area around Kuujjuaq.
When the weather's nice, it's very scenic and excellent fishing. With the lack of timber, sometimes you can climb a tall rock and see 100 miles.
Looks like you were pushing the season there a little though eh?
Nice Cub - That must be a great airplane w/ 0-360 & Ak Bush Wheels.
Is the Buck-Eighty yours?
Any chance you'd be in the market to sell it? Drop me a PM if so.
Great pics Sheephunter.
Man - I love the North eh..

Re: Haven't been around for a while
'48 I think we sure are lucky to get to see some of the places we do. Some, where you think no one else has ever been or at least never threw a pixie in. The 180 is mine and I have it just the way I want it. Wing-X, vg's, stol kit and otherwise very basic. I would like to get rid of the amphibs but can't due to the becoming shortage of fuel on the water. Actually 100LL anywhere is getting difficult in the north. Don't think I'm quite ready to sell it but might eventually consider a partner as I "need it" but don't use it enough to justify having it. A partner would be nice to help share costs... like getting it on skis. For me, I can't come to bite the bullet on the cost to go back and forth. So it sits. We had one wicked storm up there at the end of the season. 3 days of winds 50mph+ starting with rain, then sleet, then wet snow then snow. Some of the drifts arounf the lake had to be 10' high. Took two days to get it defrosted and the first sign that it was clearing and I was out of there.

The 180 is floating just behind the cabin. It was a miserable 3-4 days. The cub on the glass water was taken about a week earlier. For those that have been, when it nice, it's the nicest place on earth and when it's not... well it just isn't that hospitable at times.

I notice your 185 has the VG kit. Do you find they make a difference when the airplane is on floats ?sheephunter wrote:And the rest of the fun for the season.

Re: Haven't been around for a while
Big Pistons, I PM'd you. But in short for everyone else... I don't know. I had no way of comparing apples to apples. It went from wheels, to floats with stol & vg's . It seems very stable at low speeds. Don't know what else to say. This is the only 180 I've flown.
Re: Haven't been around for a while
As for the VG kit:
I have flown numerous 185's on wheels and floats and only have experience with the VG kit on wheels thus far (ask me in June and I'll let you know about how it is on floats). I find it doesn't make a difference in all out performance of the aircraft, but like sheephunter said it makes it quite stable at very low speeds on approach.
A little off topic but I can say I really really dislike the STOL kit that involves the dropped ailerons (can't think of the name right now.) It seems to really limit aileron travel and effectiveness and can make things a bit trickier in gusty crosswinds.

Re: Haven't been around for a while
It's the Robertson STOL kit.
To each their own, I like it. It is one of the few STOL kits that actually changes the performance numbers in the POH. But I've only ever flown it on the 337.
I haven't noticed any difference in crosswind handling, but it gives you far less warning if you stall, since the whole wing will stall rather than just the roots.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: Haven't been around for a while
That's the one, thanks.
I was told (and it sure seems to me) that it reduces the amount of aileron travel. Whether or not this is accurate info I don't know for sure. It had been a couple years since I previously flew a 185, but with over a thousand hours in various ones I remembered them being much more responsive and agile and light on the controls than this one is. This particular one is very heavy on the controls in terms of aileron inputs and has a very slow roll rate compared to what I seem to remember from other ones. It also has the wing tip extensions...perhaps that is a contributing factor?

Re: Haven't been around for a while
I would bet there in lies the key to your slow roll rate.Slats wrote: It also has the wing tip extensions...perhaps that is a contributing factor?
It's an interesting topic; STOL kits on Cessnas.
At the moment, I'm looking at picking up a very plain 180, with no kit, totally original, not even the "Cessna droop tip".
Any thoughts on this?
