Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
Somewhat embarrassing......didn't realize punk-rock fiddling tap-dancers and opera singers were that canadian....sure could have used some bagpipes in there....not to mention the obvious lip-sinking by Brian Adams and the huge hydraulic glitch during the lighting...Got to give credit to the lighters for playin it cool there......or maybe it's just me
edited for spelling and a few things I left out at the beginning......The First Nations portion was good as well as the moment of silence after the opera singer

Re: Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
maybe it just seems somewhat of a letdown compared to the crazy performance beijing made??? And I am definitly proud to be Canadian... the show just didn't really seem that outstanding.....I suppose there is only so much you can do in an enclosed stadium..
Re: Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
I enjoyed it,,,,,quite impressive,,,,,makes me proud to be a Canadian,,,,,,,
Re: Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
Was a great ceremony. Just really saddened by the georgian athletes' death. CTV was showing the video. All this money and we couldn't put a protective wall to protect these guys from those steel beams? Why the f*ck would you have steel beams right next to a track that have humans traveling at 90mph with pretty much no protective equipment? Was a real let down for the day.
I'm sure we'll learn from this, even maybe by tomorrow.

National anthem was poor, imo. Good voice on the gal, but a poor rendition - it's a National Anthem, not a pop song! Annoying tech glitch at the end, but stuff happens. The rest was pretty good..nice of them to include the moment for the young Georgian luger..
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Yea... I found that Hellelujah was kinda butched up a bit there.....I thought they said that Gretzky wasn't lighting it earlier???North Shore wrote:National anthem was poor, imo. Regarding an earlier post... not to say the fiddlers weren't great... the choice of costume was somewhat different
Re: Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
Are you kidding me? KD's performance was not only the best, but she was the only one that didn't lip synch.
Don't you find it ironic that they lock the airports down tight as a drum and then they let drunks run beside Gretzky's pickup truck?

Just didn't realize the whole point of her song and the time it occurred in the ceremony... but props to her for not lip syncing.MrWings wrote:Are you kidding me? KD's performance was not only the best, but she was the only one that didn't lip synch.

Outstanding performance. Devastating news on the opening day of the Olympics for sure. Proud to be Canadian, and from Richmond / Vancouver

Re: Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
It had it's moments. To artsy fartsy sometimes and a bit too much Indian stuff but the leaves on the ground were real neat. The torch is a cool design. Liked the rant that one guy did about defining our nation. Thought that was very well done and made one feel pround to be a Canadian. Thought the eight that brought in the olympic flag were excellent picks, but Steve Nash to help light the torch. I know he is a super star in BBall but realy? what did it have to do with the winter olympics? KD Lang, that carpet munching, vagitarian, was a real disappointment, but hey, what do you expect from a left wing bit of the country.

Was it just me, or was the right front headlight burnt out on Gretzky's truck?

Re: Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
How can you say KD Lang wasn't spectacular? Wow. I didn't care for the national anthem and I really liked the snazzy Frenchman (Garrou? Sp). The native thing is a bit overdone- we make a big deal out of their culture yet treat them like sh*t...

WRT the National Anthem, I've just seen it referred to on another forum as OMG! Canada.

We made the Canadarm, can we not make 4 fake ice arms extend out of a stadium floor at the same time?

Re: Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
A US blog about the opening ceremonies mentioned that there were LOTS of police lining a passageway a full hour before Gretzky even made his appearance...
I'd bet they had him protected, alright....
But hey, maybe it was just HIS in-laws and family... drunk and rowdy... haaaa.

It wasn't Riverdance, but some parts were very good and KD Lang was just spectacular.

I thought it was spectacular....

Feck you. Small minded.Darkwing Duck wrote:KD Lang, that carpet munching, vagitarian, was a real disappointment, but hey, what do you expect from a left wing bit of the country.
You go on to say...
and then...Darkwing Duck wrote:too much Indian stuff
Do you think he was just another WASP Canadian? Or was he the acceptable indian content you are looking for?Darkwing Duck wrote:Liked the rant that one guy did about defining our nation. Thought that was very well done and made one feel pround to be a Canadian.
Learn to accept that this isn't only your Canada. It is a lot of things for a lot of people, many of whom are thankfully different from you
1st off, this was a thread about our thoughts on the opening cerimonies. Those are mine. 2nd I never liked KD Lang, never will, especially what she tried to do to the beef industry in the 90s. So she can take a long walk off short pier for all I care. 3rd, never once did I say I never liked the Indian stuff, in fact I kind of liked it, it was just too much. You said it yourself, there is way more to Canada. They should of showed it besides the Indians. 4th, the guy who did the rant was from the 1st nations (just to appease your political correctness), in NWT if I heard correctly. He was so far from being a WASP. And this is my Canada, I have a right to an opinion, just like you do. And let me tell you something else, there are thousands like me out there. Finally, I too am a lesbian, in fact bi-sexual. I want 2 women in bed with me.

The Olympics are on again?
I thought they settled that who's fastest/slipperiest/slidyest thing four years ago.

( RCALF is the American lobby group that got rid of half of the Canadian beef herd.In case you live in the city.....)
I wonder if it's really true that KD Langs house has tongue-in-groove siding.....(:
She has a really good voice, though...

Re: Opening Ceremonies...your thoughts?
I thought the first part was a disgrace! All the native stuff was WAY over kill. Modern Canada (the one 98% of the country lives in) is all about multiculturalism of different countries. Just over 1 million natives in our country, just over 1 million people of Asian descent then we have people from many other places including Europe, India etc... They contribute MUCH more to our country especially in cities like Vancouver! That is what Canada is about.
Then we had that terrible singing of Oh Canada. I am sorry but its no a love song its our National Anthem! Celine Dion would have done a better job then this girl, or if you wanted a good singing of our anthem, the Canucks singer for most of their games, Mark O'Donnely
I thought the flag bearers where a great choice - really happy to see Romeo Dallaire which actually surprised me.
The rest of the celebration improved quiet a bit on the native theme, the fiddlers where pretty decent, and the maple leaf look was pretty good. It stayed decent until the end. The glitch with the flame kind of sucked, but sh!t does happen...
Lets hope for a less native theme on the closing ceremonies!
