Port System...

Hey yet another port question if you guys and gals have the time. I've heard that the YYZ port is not working that well for FO"s (something like 40 fo's to 4 cpts) and am interested in knowing how Ottawa and Victoria port work for new hire FO's?

As a former commuter (last job), I know how tough it can be... especially with a young family at home. At this point, it's pretty tough for FOs, since most captains live in YYC, and therefore you can expect a shortage of Capts in the system at other ports (until enough FOs upgrade and move away). My advice is to live close to YYC, it gives you the best lifestyle (ie maximizes days at home).
That being said, it's a very personal decision, and you have to what's best for you & your fam. What some guys are doing is bidding (YYZ, YOW etc) overnights, and still get to sleep in your own bed.

Great city but very expensive to live in. Not that you would necessarily have this problem but you are also tied to the ferry system on and off. It can be a hassle especially during the summer and on any holiday weekend and it is another added cost to living on the Island. If you don't mind driving a little their are communities within an hours drive that are smaller and a little cheaper to buy or I would imagine rent if that is what you would be looking at. I have a child living in Ladysmith, nice community, close to Naniamo, but be prepared for a lot of rain.

In regards to Victoria, I think people are asking about how the port system for a FO is working? IF there are any Victoria commuters on this board if they could tell us how well its working for them that would be awesome. I'm looking to know how often they would be able to start pairings out of Victoria.

Last I heard there was a shortage of Victoria FO's so lots of FO port flying our there. That was 6 months ago, lots could have changed.
