I did this same thing about eight months ago. I had already quit once before to go to the company I'm at now but things had fell through. Most small operators are expecting you to make a move in an upwards direction. Each company has an ideal time to talk to the boss. After 8pm was always the best time to meet up with my ex employer. Head in with a coffee in hand, sit down and let him know what you're thinking. Being respectful and give appropriate notice which should leave the door open if things fall through.

Re: Telling Your Employer Your Moving On
Most employers realize that it isn't forever.
But be honest, give as much notice as you can, and don't do it just after you've done your annual training or PPC. It's these job-jumpers that make bonds, ramp, and low pay the norm for entry level jobs.
I've seen it a few times where the new job didn't work out for what ever reason and the pilot came back to re-group. So unless you have a bailey bridge in your pocket (some pilots seem to be able to crawl back no matter what terms they leave under
) best leave those bridges intact.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: Telling Your Employer Your Moving On
Just do not ever ever ever ever ever tell your employer that you *may* be moving on.
Wait until you 100% absolutely have the next job, BEFORE, you breathe a word of it to your current employer.

Thanks for the help so far. Another thing I should note is the company I worked for gave me my float rating out of courtesy. I guess I feel bad for "abandoning" them and going to another company to fly floats.
